My First Snark

(I think it this is my first snark)

So I sent out Save The Dates and my 2 coworkers received them. The receptionist got fired today, and after being sad for a few minutes (I like her), I thought "Dang, I still have to invite her to the wedding." AND "DANG IT I will probably have to invite whoever they hire."

I'm mean.

Re: My First Snark

  • Why will you have to invite her replacement?
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • My wedding is still about 5 months away. I am inviting my other co-worker (my boss) so I guess it is a nice thing to do.

    1. If you like her, why are you sad you still have to invite her to the wedding?

    2. Why will you have to invite her replacement? Even if it's a small office and your wedding is five months away, you don't know how fast they'll hire or what the new person will be like.

  • I understand the snark.  Five months from now, unless you and the (prior) receptionist are buddy-buddy outside the office, she will have already faded from your life.  On that same note, she'll probably decline when she receives your invitation but, if not, I'm sure it would still be nice to see her again.

  • See this is why you only invite people who you are friends with outside of work. One of my friends who I've worked with for 3 1/2 years, left our job a couple months ago. She's a really good friend, so I want her to come to my wedding, and would be sad if she couldn't make it.  Every single one of my co workers that are invited to my wedding, I have hung out with outside work.

There is no reason to invite people just because you work with them.

This is true. My thing is if it's small like it sounds (she only mentioned her boss and receptionist) I probably wouldn't just leave one person out. I doubt I'll invite anybody from work unless we become good friends outside of work. FI on the other hand works for a small company and is friends with several of the guys outside of work. This would leave like 4 people (out of 9) who wouldn't be invited. I figured it would be most polite to just invite all 9 (well, plus spouses) instead of leaving 4 out.

I don't think this is a hard and fast rule. You spend 40+ hours a week with these people; it's not always necessary to spend additional time outside of work in order to consider them "close." Some of my biggest heart-to-hearts have been with coworkers on a walk for coffee or huddled in a conference room or my office with the door closed. I barely have time after work to see my other friends/family, let alone leave more time for work friends! Granted I work in a very social industry/office environment so I realize it's not the same in, say, a bank... but you can't harsh on OP for wanting to invite people she may spend more time with than her actual family, despite being within working hours.

I had a similar situation... I just started a new job in December (2 weeks before we got engaged) so I penciled in my other manager-teammates to see if we got close enough as time went on to warrant inviting them. I knew I would invite my boss and my office-mate (we share) but just wanted to leave room for the others. The day after save the dates went out, one of those managers got fired. I actually woke up in the middle of the next night in a panic over whether I had sent him one. Thankfully I hadn't, because I knew StD=invitation and he was on the tentative list. Phew!

  • Just an update.

I was told that the girl that got fired has been talking crap about me. She said I wanted her gone because she was so pretty. LOL

Hopefully she and her husband will decline the invitation.

If this is true, you have no obligation to send that invitation, regardless of Save the Date status.
