no supermajority for ANC

Official results won't be announced for another 4 hours, but with 100% of votes counted I think it's safe to say that the audited figures won't differ too much. They managed to get 62%, 5% short of the supermajority. The ANC has lost 22 seats under Zuma.

The DA didn't get the 30% they were hoping for, they managed 22%, which is still up from previous elections.

I haven't seen provincial results yet.

Anyway, it looks like FI and I will not have to flee the country.

Re: no supermajority for ANC

  • Congrats on staying in SA! I know the election was really worrying, and while it's not the best possible outcome, it's good to see that it's not the worst either.
  • Thanks @Simky906.

I'm really glad that we don't have to leave. Here's hoping we can keep pushing the DA's numbers up in coming years!

Election results in South Africa.  ANC is Mandela's old party, but sounds like they've had some concerns lately.  @kytchynwitche please feel free to correct me if any of that is wrong.

FINALLY got my computer to accept a connection through my phone so I could reply to this. Thanks TK for the totally unnecessary "upgrade"!

Anyway, no you've pretty much got it right. The ANC is Mandela's former party. Unfortunately we went from Mandela [a truly great man who was all about unity, equality, freedom, and education] to Mbeki [a man who told the world that HIV does not cause AIDS because "a virus can't cause a syndrome" and who backed ministers advocating garlic, beetroot, and African potatoes as "better than ARVs"], and now onto Zuma [who has worked against education from day one, who himself only has a fourth grade education, who was accused of raping an HIV+ relative who stayed with him and said, by way of defence, "It's okay, I showered afterwards"].

The leadership of the ANC now is made up of fraudsters and gluttons, many of whom have no knowledge whatsoever of the areas they govern. Their expenditure is ridiculous, service delivery has fallen at an alarming rate, and government resources are used to pay for ministers' luxury vehicles, holidays, shopping trips, and sexual liaisons.

Employment is lower than ever, taxes higher, and we're expected to pay tolls for a "highway upgrade" which consisted of erecting the gantries on which the toll system's cameras rest. The government has spent millions of Rand on "security upgrades" to the president's residence, which I grant you is standard pretty much everywhere, except that the upgrades included a swimming pool [which they say is a fire pool], and a cinema. I'm not sure how those would be categorised as security features...

Basically, the country has gone to hell in a hand-basket under the ANC's current leadership, but because of tribal culture and belief systems, many people are too scared to vote against them. They've been told, for years, that if they don't vote ANC, the sangoma (witch doctor) will know and various horrible things will happen to them and their families.

I don't believe that any of our parties are perfect, but things do seem to work better in those areas which have been governed by the DA since the last election. We can only hope that the various towns and cities they won in this election will continue to improve, and encourage people to vote DA in future elections.

The big worry in the run up to the elections was that the ANC would receive a supermajority (67% of the vote) which would enable them to pass laws and make changes to our constitution unopposed. The top brass of the party have been very vocal about their feelings towards whites, and there has been much concern that an ANC supermajority without Mandela to oppose it would lead to the mass slaughter and/or exile of non-blacks. Also, supermajority would enable the ANC to declare a new (some feared indefinite) term of office, which would put us in a similar position to Zimbabwe.
