whats in a name?

Bit of background: FI and I are getting married at city hall were we are each required to have a witness.

I met FI after work today and we start giving a run down of our days. FI informs me his 'best man' doesn't want to be best man but still be his witness. The reason he doesnt want to be BM and stand up with FI is he doesn't want to give a speech at the reception. He told FI he's been having panick attacks about it.

We have told him he doesn't have to give a speech; no one does. FI 'witness' still wants to get matching suits with FI, is still planning his bachelor party and wants to get ready with him...

Am I crazy, or does this sound like being a groomsman but without the name?

  • You don't need a wedding party with titles at all. Perfectly ok to be a witness without any other title. I think matching suits would look pretty silly at city hall though, TBH.

The bachelor party thing is irrelevant. Anyone can offer to throw a bachelor party - it's not a "groomsman's duty."

  • Yeah, who cares what he is called? He's your fiance's friend who is witnessing your marriage. He doesn't need a title.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I do agree it sounds like he wants to be a GM without the name, but if that's what he wants, go for it.  No harm done.

  • If the title is stressing him out, let him go without. NBD.
