When to start looking for a dress?

Hello ladies!

My wedding is not until September of 2015 but I was just curious to find out how far out people have started looking for their dresses? We are getting married in Mexico and I want a very simple, light, airy dress. I may not even buy it from a typical "bridal shop" as I've found they do not have many options for destination brides, at least not what I am looking for. With that said, I probably won't need much as far as alterations go. How long can I wait before I start looking??

Re: When to start looking for a dress?

  • I'm getting married in June of 2015 and I have set an appointment to start looking June 7th! I'm not sure I need a whole year to find a dress but there are so many decisions that I would feel better about making once I know how casual of a dress I end up with. Plus I'm excited about the time with my girls!!! I don't know what etiquette says but that's my my plans are!
  • I am getting married May 15 2015, and I am thinking that I will probably make my appointments for some time in July. So about ten months ahead of time.

If you end up going traditional bridal shop, you should probably give yourself 4-6 months depending on the designer.  If you can fit into sample size okay, you could push it quite a bit and buy one straight from the shop floor.
  • I am getting married in March 2015.  I started looking in February.  I just ordered my dress today.  I looked around a bit.  Went to a few places to try some on and finally found the one last week.  It takes 6 months to get it in (which will be November) and then I have time for alterations and such.  I think if you start looking a year out it will give you a good amount of time and you wont have to feel rushed or pressured.

Thanks ladies! I'm just worried I will not be down to my goal weight by September so I was thinking about 10 months out and hoping that would be enough time! Also my MOH will be 9 months preggo in September and I'm thinking she's not going to be in the mood to dress shop haha.
  • I was told 8 months and after going through the process I believe it. It typically takes 6-8 months to get your dress in then I would factor in another 2 months for alterations depending on what you may need or want to do. Good luck!
  • I think I am the exception here, and am really probably way too relaxed about wedding planning (we flipped a coin to decide where to go).  I am getting married 6.16.14 and just went dress shopping the first weekend of May at BHLDN in Georgetown.  Luckily, I found the perfect gown and purchased it.  The gown arrived at my house this past Monday and I am going tomorrow to have it altered.  I'm sure that's cutting it incredibly close, but like I said, I might be a little too relaxed when it comes to the planning piece.  I've heard 8 months is the average.

I also had a friend get married recently and she had an 8 month engagement, and purchased a gown about 4 months ahead of time with no problems or glitches.  Of course anyone at a bridal shop will tell you that's crunch time and sometimes sort of try to push you into ordering the gown immediately, but don't let people get pushy.  Once you find the perfect gown and order it, they work on your timing to get it done.  Good luck!
