Cake tasting scheduled! What do you think of these flavor options? *Update in comments*

Moving right along here! I just scheduled our cake tasting on May 8th! Woohoo!!

So we had to pick three cake flavors to sample at the tasting. Here's what I chose. Tell me what you think and how you think these would go over for our October 18th wedding. We can also do different flavors for different tiers, so if you think any would combine ok, let me know as well! Thanks all!

1.) Pumpkin cake with dulce de leche filling

2.) White cake with whipped cream and strawberry filling

3.) Marble cake with boston creme filling.

Of those three I would go with choice #2.  Though I'd happily eat all three options, fancier flavors like pumpkin and boston creme aren't as universally liked by as many guests.  I'm not personally a fan of different flavor tiers, I've been at weddings where I'm served a piece of white cake and notice someone else has chocolate, and I'd prefer that.  Will your guests get to choose which flavor they want?
Have fun at your cake tasting- that's one of the best parts of wedding planning! :)
  • I think your first two flavors sound awesome. I absolutely hate marble cake so I'm biased here, but why choose that? You already have a white cake option so why not try chocolate?

  • I don't find pumpkin to be a favorite for the masses.  I also wouldn't do marble cake because some people don't like chocolate so they wouldn't eat the cake even if they really wanted cake.

I like option 2 the best but I think throwing in a second tier of chocolate with whatever filling would be good.

  • Thanks ladies!

  • I would totally devour some pumpkin or marble cake, but agree they're divisive so I vote #2 as well. I've found with general party hosting that the more choices are offered, the more people will take - people will want one of each if they see multiple flavors, so you'll go through more total servings. If you're ok with that, awesome, but then I'd go full-on chocolate (mmmmm mocha filling... or hazelnut...). Don't beat around the bush with marble. :)

We ended up going with a lemon cake (very subtle lemon flavor) with fresh strawberries and cream cheese buttercream frosting. Delish. Not fall-like at all, oh well. :)

  • @lolo883, the bakery I am using offered a cake really similar sounding to yours. I just worry about the lemon.

I was worried too, and we tasted at two different places and I hated the first bakery's lemon. Tasted perfumey and way too strong. Totally fake. This one is light, fresh and delicious.

I wanna go cake tasting again! lol.

  • I think the pumpkin and white cake options sound delicious, but agree with PPs that the marble might not go over as well and to just do a chocolate tier. We are also doing 3 different flavors because we love cake and the more cake choices the better haha

I'd gobble up #2. I wouldn't be ecstatic over the other two choices.

I'd eat all three but like 2 and 3 the best.

Getting multiple flavors may complicate logistics.  My friend that serves at weddings says when they have 3 different desserts the caterer directs to just pass them out and what people get is what they get.  This is frustrating to her because people then ask her to change and there is not much she can do.

A guy at work had 3 flavors put out on a buffet.  They ran out of cake.

  • I also love pumpkin! It's my favorite flavor at dunkin donuts :) I also love strawberries MMMMM! I don't care for Boston Cream, but my FI is a fan. If it were me, I'd have pumpkin and strawberry, even if they don't all go together :)
  • #2 is the safest choice, for a crowd pleaser, but I think pumpkin would be very fun for a fall wedding. If you go with #1 or #3, I suggest you have other desserts available too for the people who are less adventurous.
  • The white cake with the whipped cream and strawberry will probably be the biggest crowd pleaser (and probably the one I'd like best personally). Pumpkin cake is a fun, unique choice for a fall wedding, but not everyone likes that flavor, so it might be a bit risky.

  • I would love them all, but 2 is the safest, most mass-appeal choice, I would think. However, we had 2 "normal" flavor cupcakes and a more exotic one, and we had fewer of the exotic one left over, so you never know.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I would also love them all, but I agree that #2 is probably your safest, most across-the-board appealing flavor.  Maybe you could serve cupcakes of the other two flavors.
  • We did spice with a caramel filling. Everyone loved it. We had people looking for seconds. I personally don't each chocolate and don't like fruit with my cake, so of your options I would go pumpkin.
  • So we had our tasting last night! I am literally on a sugar high still. We ended up getting three flavors because we couldn't decide. Two of the three were suggested by the bakery and were just too good to pass up!

Largest tier-Yellow cake with Dulce de Leche

Medium tier-Pumpkin cake with Dulce de Leche

Smallest tier-Red velvet cake with cream cheese

  • Yum! I'm glad you enjoyed your tasting... sounds like you'll have an awesome cake!

  • Oh my gosh the flavors you ended up with sound amazing!
  • Thanks! I am so excited for the cake! The artist is awesome and she is going to do a buttercream design that will be a replica of the lace on my dress.

  • That is my favorite combination! I love anything lemon. We went with a vanilla bean and white chocolate ganache and cupecakes in chocolate and chocolate ganache and for the fiance carrot cake with a cream cheese buttercream
