My husband was new to the latin.  He was raised always going to the Mass in English, i never attended the English growing up. I started taking him to the Latin wehn we met, so he was exposed to it over a period of about a year and a half.  I left it to him to decide whether we would do our wedding in English or Latin.  He knew it was important to me to do it in latin, so we did. We are both Catholic, so all of our older relatives recognized and remembered the Latin.  we received many compliments on how it had been years since they'd seen a latin mass, and how nice it was.  Those that were younger, werent familiar, but thought it was very interesting to see.  My mom and sister were the only other regular latin mass attendees in attendance. My Church provided latin-english missals for folks to follow along with (my Church does a daily latin Mass as well as every sunday there is one).  We didnt do programs.  The priest gave a nice explanation after we did our vows (you do the vows immediately when you reach the altar, before the Mass, whereas in the English, the vows are usually in the middle somewhere) about what the mass would be like, etc.  He explained how communion would work (i.e., those who arent catholic can still come up for a blessing, etc., and explained that it was customary to kneel for communion, but that it could be received either hand or tongue (my H and i always receive on the tongue at Latin, and i always do the tongue at the English as well, although he reverts back to hand for the English). As for the music, we opted to have just teh organist and no soloist.  the only song i really wanted was the Ave Maria, which played when our WP walked in (just a MOH and a Best Man) and us (i walked down teh aisle with my husband to be).  Otherwise, i let the organist pick the music becuase i honeslty didnt care.  i just wanted it to sound good, and by letting her pick, i knew she'd pick the songs that she knew how to play well, and that would fit with the relevant parts of the Mass.  I clearly remember Ave Maria, but i couldnt tell you a single other song that was played.

Yup - that's the one we have! FI used it to make our programs. We're the reverse - FI was going to the Latin Mass orginally and introduced me to it.  We've both been going for a few years now. Our parents' generation will probably remember most of the mass, but I think the majority of our guests will be seeing it for the first time. The church we go to regularly has an amazing choir (professionally trained) and so they will be trekking up to our chapel for the wedding. It should be beautiful!Glad to see someone else appreciates the Latin Mass :-)

I plan on having a Latin Mass for our wedding.  I haven't attended the Novus Ordo on any regular basis in ages, and I don't even know the responses anymore.  I've been attending TLM almost exclusively for years, while FI attends when he can as there isn't one close by for him.  If we court on Sundays, he attends TLM with me, and does prefer it.  Both of us took Latin in High School.

OC, i know how you feel.  when i go to the English, i'm totally lost.  i dont know any responses or prayers, and to be totally honest, i really dont like it.  While i dont know really any Latin, i know the parts of the mass and i understand what's going on way more than i do when its in English. If we have kids, i want them to be familiar with both versions since the Latin isnt offered everywhere (yet).

I know I am late on this respones, but I wanted to know there are more Latin Mass brides out there. We are having a TLM for our wedding. We are using the mass booklets.
  • Hi, I realize this post is years and years old, but in case anybody sees this, I have a related question. My fiance is not Catholic and we are having a novus ordo ceremony (not a mass). I'm trying my best to choose the readings and prayers that are most similar to he TLM (it's tough...) and am wondering if anybody out there has tips for that? Any ideas for ensuring that the ceremony is solemn and reverent despite some of the really watered down, fluffy language? Any music suggestions? Thanks all!!
  • I don't know about readings and prayers, but the things you can do to make it most like the TLM (all these things are perfectly legit, if rarely used, in the novus ordo,) include having the priest face the same direction as the people, and having as much said in latin as possible. Also communion kneeling and at the altar rail if there is one. I dont know about how much difference which readings or prayers will make.
    Anniversary
  • id focus on your music too - to me, the hymns in the NO are much more protestant sounding than the hymns most often used in the TLM.
