Musicians are guests not vendors

My wedding is this Saturday, May 17th. The pianist that we hired to accompany 2 vocal performers contacted me tonight to inform me that he was expected a seat and dinner for he and his spouse and the 2 vocal performers we hired. I informed him that unfortunately, all of our tables are full with guests. However, all of our vendors will be able to order from the hotel's room service menu as a courtesy. He indicated that I was rude and un professional and that the normal etiquette is that musicians aren't considered "vendors" and that they have special consideration and are always given a seat at a table such as the clergy that performs the vows etc. Is this true? I mean if I am paying you to perform at my wedding, I am suppose to offer YOU the same meal($150.00) as my guests???? sorry for venting.

Re: Musicians are guests not vendors

  • I'm a musician. Musicians are vendors. They are working at your wedding. Unless they are personal friends and would otherwise be invited to the wedding. And if that is the case, it is rude to ask them to work at your wedding (unless they offer!)

If you are paying them, they are vendors.  If they are performing at your wedding without pay, they are guests.
Exception:  celebrity performers.  (You'd damn well better seat Michael Buble and his date at a table!)

He's a vendor, not a guest.  A meal is appropriate if he is there all evening, but a seat at the table with the guests (and for his wife?!) is not necessary.

Personally, his attitude in calling you rude would make me nervous that perhaps he wouldn't show up.  I'd probably be scrambling to find someone else!

ETA - Just realized your wedding already happened.  How'd it go??

You shouldnt be making the vendors pay for their own meals though. That is your responsibility to provide them a meal. They do not need to be sat at a table but you do need to give them something to eat free of charge, and preferably what the guests are eating.

Need to add this only applies to vendors working the whole time like musicians or photographers. If your officiant is not working or invited to your reception you dont need to feed him. Same with the florist as they usually just set up & leave.
