Sparklers?

Has anyone had any experience with sparklers in lieu of rice/bubbles/birdseed?  I was at a wedding this weekend that did it and it was really pretty, but I'm wondering if there are any downfalls?

Re: Sparklers?

  • I went to a wedding where they had sparklers.  I guess the one recommendation that I have is to make sure that the venue staff is helpful in lighting the sparklers.  The one I went to didn't have a lot of candles or lighters and by the time I lit my sparkler near the end of the line the ones at the beginning were already burned halfway down.

I think it's a neat idea, but every time I consider it I can't help but think of the safety issues of having drunk people holding them.

  • I'm having a dry wedding so there *shouldn't* be any drunk people!  haha  :)

Good call.  The venue is my uncle's farm (he's OK with sparklers, I already asked - especially since my FI and 1/2 our guest list are firefighters!  lol) so I will just make sure that we have plenty of people to help light them all.

Severe burns.  They burn at something like 2000 degrees.  People tend to be fairly close together during the send off.  It would be really easy for one person to touch another person's (or their own) clothes, hair, or skin with their sparkler.

  • The only downfall I can state is that when my friend had them for her wedding, the photos looked nothing like pinterest. It was cute though!

At my friends wedding they did the "grand ext" THREE times just so that they could get good pictures. Nothing like staging your grand exit just for pictures.

    STUCK
Did you and I go to the same wedding? It was so cheesy and unromantic and shallow.

OP, there are "extra long" sparklers or something out there. Grab those. You want the longest ones you can find so they don't burn out so quickly.

That's ridiculous. Our photographer asked us if we wanted to do a grand exit for pictures since he'll leave before the reception is over. The whole thing seemed weird to me. We're not going to be ready to actually leave the reception by then, so why would we want to stage a grand exit just for pictures and then come back to the reception? uhhh...just take a couple more cute pics of us dancing...that's enough of an ending for me. :)

Hmm   At the one I was at my pictures of the exit turned out really cute... maybe I got lucky.

Yes, I think she had those.  I snagged a pack from my uncle (the father of the bride - I asked if he had an extra one for my daughter who wasn't brave enough to do one during the exit but later decided she wanted to try it --he gave me a pack of 20 of them!) So I can maybe figure out where she got them from and use the same ones.

Nope, I am too. Especially if there will be kids running around flailing them all over the place!

  • I was at a wedding with sparklers and it turned out okay. I think some of the wedding party lit them in small groups down the line so that they were all sparkling at the same time. A lot of us had been drinking and I don't remember anyone burning themselves :)

You should check and make sure your venue allows them first. My venue doesn't, but the coordinator pretty much told me that they would "look the other way" as long as there is no damage. I'm not taking that risk though.

Sparklers are cute and the one time I've seen them at a wedding, the look of everyone with them was really cool.  The whole area had a glow to it and the pictures of it look fantastic.

What wasn't cool was the child that burned a man's pants with his (and promptly threw it on the ground, causing a mild panic attack among a few guests) and the woman who burned her hand trying to light hers with a match from her purse instead of waiting for the people who were going around lighting them.

Me too! I've always hated them and never wanted to use them because "hello flaming sparks flying all over the place!" LOL
