Italy/France in Late December?

My fiance and I are looking at possible destinations for our honeymoon. We would be traveling from about 12/27/14-1/10/15. We are looking at Italy/France as a choice, but I'm concerned about the weather. Obviously, weather varies from year to year, but I was hoping some of you had traveled to Italy or France during December/January and could share your experiences. Did the weather keep you from being able to enjoy sightseeing?

Re: Italy/France in Late December?

  • There are so many indoor things to do.  Do you like museums?  Churches and cathedrals?
You might consider southern Spain.  Weather won't be a problem there.

  • We do like museums and seeing historic places like churches. But we'd also like to be able to just walk around and kind of take it all in, if that makes sense.

The weather in France is various in this period. Two years ago, early december, there was a beautiful weather, sun, a good temperature. The next year was very cold.
I agree with lilybet13, if you are looking for the best weather possible, the south is better.
  • It will be warmer the further south you go, but it will still be winter. Rome will be cool and rainy, but no snow. Paris occasionally gets snow but it will most likely be cool and rainy as well. It depends on how you deal with the rain- does walking in the rain/ having to wear coats and use umbrellas deter you? Yes, there are a lot of indoor things to do, but you also don't want to miss the feeling of exploring a city by walking. It is all a Mediterranean climate which means cool, wet winters.

If you have your heart set on France/Italy, a really good time of year to go is Sept/October. It is still fairly warm but a lot cheaper as the summer tourists have left. Maybe take a local Mini-moon and go for a big trip when the weather is better.

London Lisa is right, September is the perfect month to go to France. This is the end of the summer season, so there is very few tourists and a very good weather.
  • I went to France in December a few years ago. I am from the Northeast, so to me it was typical northeast weather it wasn't unbearable I walked around, but I did spend a good deal of time in museums. I remember eating at an outdoor cafe, they had heaters going it was nice.

  • Thank you all for the feedback/suggestions! I think we could probably handle the weather, but since
France/Italy is just one place we are considering, maybe it would be better to go somewhere else and plan a trip to Europe when the weather is better.
  • While I lived in London, I had been to both multiple times and at multiple times in the year. Italy was great during the winter for me (not unbearably hot, and not too cold.... zero snow) but I absolutely loathed France in December, it was slushy and bleak and blah. I would say France is best either around April or September.

France and Italy are fantastic places to visit at any time of year, but I really think it depends on where you live as to how bad the weather could affect your honeymoon! For example, I'm from the UK and I love to visit Western Europe even in snowy winters as I don't like the heat. My sister lives in LA and found the UK spring way too cold for her! If you live in a hot climate you may find the European winter too much. Southern Spain and Portugal are usually mild and warm/cool in the winter if that helps!

  • We did Italy that time of year many years ago. We got a lot of rain in Rome, but otherwise the weather was wonderful. In the 50s-60s most days, which was plenty comfortable for walking around. The natives thought it was cold, but it was a welcome reprieve from upstate NY winters for us.

  • Thank you all for the help! I think we are going to look more at destinations in the southern hemisphere. I can handle the cold, but I think I would enjoy Europe a lot more when the weather is warmer.
