job application question - resume/cover letter

I'm applying to teaching positions that require me to fill in their application (and send in ZILLIONS of forms, which thankfully is already done.)

In the job descriptions, they ask that you apply and then email a copy of your resume to the principal.  Should I also attach a formal cover letter to the email or write a brief cover letter-type summary in my email body?  I can also do both :)

Opinions?

I'm leaning towards both but don't want it to be TOO much :)
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

    I've been applying for a shit ton of jobs lately, (a lot for schools since that is what I'm going to school for) and I have been uploading a formal cover letter so they can easily print it... with a slight introduction of what I've attached in the email.

    That's just my thought anyway.

    @BreMR yep that's what I was envisioning. I really just want to say "I'm baller. you should hire me" but that likely won't work :)

    I haven't had any luck NOT putting that in my applications, maybe I should add it and spark more interest :)

    @BreMR I got an interview without applying for a position so I figure if I actually APPLY to these others I might have a few more options.  Hopefully.

    When possible, I email something like, "Dear so and so, I am so and so, applying to X position. My cover letter and resume are attached. Sincerely, me."

    I remember doing a variation of both when I was job hunting a couple of years ago. I would attach the formal letter, and in the body of the email provide a few sentences that basically summed up my cover letter.

    I did a variation of everything I could think of.

    Dear So-and-So
    I have attached my cover letter and resume for the following position.  I have also formally applied on your website.  <cover-lettery 'I'm excited about this oppurtunity mumbo-jumbo'>

    Thanks - I'll get to writing that cover letter.  I have to apply by tomorrow for a few positions so I want to try to get the applications in by tonight.
