Carnations

Why is it considered a big " NO NO" to have carnations as the flowers for your wedding bouquets? I honestly don't have a large budget for flowers and like carnations so I chose all white carnation bouquets for my bridesmaids and have a rose and carnation bouqet for myself. Friends and family are telling me that carnations are the "cheap man's" wedding flower.

That's why they are considered a "no no." They are really cheap flowers and everyone knows it. My mom says they are used a lot as funeral flowers but i'm not too sure on that one. I say if it makes you happy, and you can save money, ignore them and do what you want.

They're filler flowers. Hang out ont his board for a while or go through some past posts. People have pretty good ideas on how to save money on flowers.

For what it's worth, my florist let it slip that, because of the economy, florists will cut their fee as much as they can if they think you'll walk out and do DIY flowers. Same for photographers.

If it makes you feel better about having inexpensive flowers, my bouquest is white daisies and white lisianthus. MOH will have black eyed susans and golden roses.

this is your wedding...I will say it again...this is YOUR wedding. if you want carnations then use them.If other people have objections, ask them to pur their money where their mouth is and anti up the $ for roses! JMO

Ya know carnations are the longest living flower so thats a plus, they will look fresh and everything the whole time. I think carnations can be pretty if used right. I think red carnations are very pertty. Maybe you could use certain flowers for the wedding and then for centerpieces use carnations or something? I think when you put carnations tightly together they look good. Jus play around with them and get ideas.

Do what you wanna do in a tasteful way and you should be just fine.

Do what you think is best for you. Everyone has an opinion honey, but they don't have to live with it...you do. I personally think a bouquet of white carnations really tightly packed like these can look really pretty. It's when you get into the tinted ones that it starts to look sketchy.

it doesn't matter. after a few months people won't even remember what ur flowers look like. & if they're gonna judge u on using carnations, they're not worth the bother. i'm using fake carnations all over my wedding (even cheaper!) i don't give a crud! if it makes it so i can have some form of florals, i'm gonna do it! & i don't suggest u pay someone to arrange them. that's just as expensive if u didn't use carnations! (fake or not)

This is something that really gets me too. I understand if people just do not like the look of carnations, but to judge someone for using them because they were inexpensive is really, really horrible. First of all, every bride want pretty bouquets and arrangements for her wedding. Why pay an arm and a leg for something that you will use for one day and maybe your mom will put on her kitchen table for a week or so? It makes no sense to spend $500 for peonies when you could get so much more for your money with carnations.

This economy is crap, people should understand you aren't going to take out a loan so you can have hydrangeas and quell everyone else's disapproval of carnations.

Hey ... Dont think of it as a "poor mans flowers"... We used white and purple hydragena... they were comparable and beautiful.. I'm not a huge fan of flowers.. but I hear gerber , wax , and roses from wholesale stores sell at a lower price. Keep your chin up.. I'm sure everything will turn out just magical for your dreamy day with your future husband.

She wanted to know why carnations are considered a no-no. We told her the reasons - we didn't make this up out of thin air.

I interpreted the post as she picked them because it is what she could afford. Fine. If it's what she really wants then she should do it. Nowhere did she say it was because she loves these flowers, which is why I encouraged her to look through past threads and hang out here for a while. A lot of ladies found budget cutting ways to get the flowers they wanted or comparable ones.

yes certainly it is THEIR wedding .Don't think she was talking about her FI's opinion.....but all the others who are sticking their noses where they don't belong. I would venture to guess her FI doesn't care either way..JMO

I will be using carnations for ALL of my wedding Flowers. I could careless if anyone thinks they are "cheap mans" flowers or "funreal" Flowers.

I have always loved carnations.

I will be making my own flowers and I will be even Dying them to match our wedding colors.

It's your wedding and you can have what ever flowers you want to have!

Thanks everyone. I love carnations so that's why I chose them. It was a plus that they are inexpensive. I 'm gonna keep them as my flowers. They're all white like the picture Muffins Mom posted and going to be bunched together so I think they will look beautiful. I forgot that in a month or so after the wedding no one is going to remember the flowers anyway. Thanks.

My sorority's flower is the pink carnation, so I actually love them. They are the longest living cut flower, and I like their slight fragrance. I considered carnations or hydrangeas for my flowers but ultimately decided to go wtih gerber daisys they are very budget friendly and i think they are just happy flowers. I don't think anyone will or should judge you for having carnations they are beautiful even if hey are cheap.
