Well shoot...

My ring is officially too big on me.  When I went in and got sized for it I told the jeweler that I wore a size 5, and that I had a size 5 ring that I wore on my left hand for years and it fit me perfectly.  He said the size 5 seemed a smidge loose and did I want to try lower?  Nope, I get oddly claustrophobic with tight jewelery.  Well, turns out that little 1/4 carat sapphire I have is not as heavy as this diamond (shocker) so now this heavy diamond constantly falls to the side.

I have to send my ring back in for more sizing.  NOOOOO!!!

Re: Well shoot...

  • Yup, I had the same argument with my jeweler. My last e-ring was a 5.75, but he measured me a 4.75! He said my large head/stone is prone to spinning, so it would be much easier to go up later than down. I wore around a size 5 all day yesterday, and he was right! I could definitely stand to go smaller. When I got home yesterday, I found out my BF ordered my ring yesterday, so I started freaking out that maybe even the 4.75 would be too big! I ran to the jeweler as soon as they opened this morning to try the 4.5, but luckily 4.75 seems to be correct! Where do you have to send it/ how long will it be? When I finally get my ring, I'm not sending it anywhere!!! lol

Luckily, even though he bought my ring from Shaneco he bought my stone from a small independent jeweler, (obviously giving up my Shaneco warranty) and sized and set my stone last time in 2 days apparently!  So I'd say a day or two...

It will be a very long day or two. I even moved the ring to my right hand, and its even too big on my other hand :(  This is when I realized I was marrying the right man though, when he said "well you have two options.. either send it in to get re-sized or change your diet to strictly coldstone"

  • I've never heard of ShaneCo, is it like Zales?  The jeweler told BF that he could set my stone in front of him when my setting comes in, whereas some other jewelers we talked to had to send it out for days or weeks, which I was not at all cool with.  So even though I think he paid a tiny bit too much for the setting, I'm also glad we have a local person now.  I don't know if there's any warranty though.

Times like these are why I firmly believe in stand in rings! ;-)

In fact, I ordered my (first) stand in this afternoon!

I would definitely choose the coldstone diet - although what sparked my freak-out last night was BF's reminder that we had to start the wedding diet soon, and maybe my finger would get smaller!  Well, I don't think my knuckles will shrink that much, because I almost needed to request some butter to get the sizer back off my finger! lol

  • BreMR - Are you in Colorado? I'm just guessing since you got your ring at ShaneCo, Their commercials make me laugh, he's so monotone!

No, Minnesota actually!!  I LOVE Tom Shane's monotone voice.  I always told my FI "I want to buy a ring from Shaneco because Tom seems like such a cool guy"  I think I'm alone in this opinion, because everyone around here haaates those commercials!!

@Kelani23 Shaneco is a smaller chain than Zales I believe, they pride themselves on working directly with the diamond importers and getting you a better price for the diamonds.  I don't know how true it is because we saved about $900 bucks going to someone else.

Also, the wedding diet thing is exactly why I know I have to get it even smaller because since I've put on some lbs (10 to be exact) i had to move my sapphire from my right hand to left for awhile, I obviously gained weight in my fingers. So I know if I lose this pesky 10 then my ring will probably be even more loose.

  • My ring is a 4.25. I went between every size between a 4 and a 5 while being sized before FI got it. Although it gets a bit snug after riding, it fits amazing. I also, however, don't have a huge center stone. (It's a small aquamarine)

  • Mine is a bit loose and spins too...it's top heavy and it's a bit of a pain when I'm typing. We got my finger sized, and he said it was made as a 5, which should be right, but it's pretty easy to pull off. I'm stalling because I don't want to go too small and then have my fingers all swollen and puffy around the ring in the summer. I want it to get hot so I can see what it's like before I decide.

@lmcooper86 that is actually exactly what the jeweler said when I contacted him, to see how it fits during the summer.  Which is all fine and dandy, but then when winter comes it's going to be a disaster.

The good thing is, if I wait for the summer hopefully I"ll finally have lost some of the weight I gained and going smaller won't be so bad when it gets hot again.

  • I don't know what size my band is, but we had it sized to the smallest size that would fit over my knuckle-  it is still loose and the stone is always to the side.  She also added those little balls inside the back of the band to help keep it from spinning.  All that happened is the stone still likes to rest to the side, and one of the little balls is giving me a callous in the center of my finger lol.  I don't think I can size my ring down at all because I won't be able to take it off my finger!!  I'm considering sizing down and having the balls removed though since they don't help.  Don't know if it will help or hurt the spinning.

I always wonder what other people do, I never anticipated having these issues!

  • I've always been told that engagement rings should be on the smaller side. Like, if you range between a 5 and a 6, always go with the 5 since e-rings are typically pretty heavy and are therefore more likely to spin. That being said, you don't want your finger to feel like its circulation is being cut off! Could you get one of those cushion things that keep a ring in place without having to go to the jewelers? *sigh* Who would have thought something as simple as sizing your finger would be so complicated?

My ring is more of a 'european' style with a flat bottom so it doesn't really spin as easy:
like this- but this is not my ring:
    image

I would have the little ball thing soldered in if I need to - wait until it gets a bit more hot and my fingers swell a bit to make sure my ring is right where I need it.

EDIT - I hit post before ready.

Oooh I bet that does help!!

I love that look too!! I had no idea that type of ring even existed!

  • I've seen those, but I don't understand how it keeps the ring from spinning?  It's still circular on the inside?

  • My ring has the sizing bumps, and I think they help with the spinning. I'm going to ask to have them added to my birthstone ring, too, because it's about a 1/4 size too big and it seems easier/cheaper than full-on resizing.
  • Ladies I found the solution to your summer/winter size problem!  As a hot yoga instructor my fingers tend to swell up during a class which would make it impossible to get my ring on after class.  My jeweler recommended superfit, which opens and closes on a hingy thing so I don't have to slide it on or worry about it getting stuck on my knuckle.  It was amazing, they put it on my ring and it literally looks exactly the same when its closed.  Coolest thing ive ever seen!
