Where is my dress?!

So ordered my dress in November, BM's dresses in January for my august wedding. It is now June and none of the dresses have come in! Every time I call the shop they say it will be a few more weeks by they won't give me a date. I didn't order things so far in advance to have them come so late and close to our date. Is this shop giving me the run around or what? I'm going in today to talk to them in person and see if I can get some answers. When these dresses were all ordered the frame I was given was 4-6 months.

Re: Where is my dress?!

  • Where did you order them from? I would be concerned at this point too. It's good you'll be stopping by there soon. Sorry for the headache!

I am also an August bride, and when I ordered my dress, and when we went to order the BMs dresses we were given an approximate date.

Def. go in there, they should have given you some type of time frame.
  • Is this a local store? I would tread carefully as to not piss anyone off and they write you off, but I would also be persistent. I'd start by calling once a week, mainly for your dress since it has now been eight months.
  • This would worry me bc *paranoid horror story* a local notoriously crappy bridal salon closed up one day and declared bankruptcy. Dresses were returned via their lawyer, but MANY dresses (including a girl I personally know) were never ordered. The money was taken, but no orders placed.

I would try calling the manufacturer and seeing if they could tell you if it has been ordered.

  • My dress took 7 months to come in (which is where you are now). I ordered it in August and they said it would be in Jan-Feb, and it didn't come in until March. However, I had custom additions added, so it was understandable. The bridesmaid dresses should not take this long however.

My mom's dress took awhile to come in, 5 months I believe. So it could be designer specific.
Have you guys paid for any of the dresses in full?

  • Go to the shop, like tomorrow!
  • I'd definitely be concerned. Can you contact the maker of the dress? I ordered my dress the end of February and got it last week.
  • I would be concerned I'd stop by. My bm dresses arrived last Friday and my wedding is next weekend.  It was a bit nerve wrecking the shop was so helpful in getting them in and keeping me updated (the designer of the dresses was behind it was no fault of the dress shop as they were ordered in mid November) luckily I didn't need a plan B.

I would go to the store and not leave until you could get some more information.

When I ordered my dress and bridesmaids dresses, we were given a week to expect the dresses.  The shop said they'd call when it was in, probably the week of __ - ___.  They came in the week predicted.

    It shouldn't be that vague.

I don't want to give you a horror story, but this happened with me one time with a bridesmaid's dress that was ordered 11 months in advance. I kept calling and calling. A week before the wedding they finally told me that there had been problems with a shortage of the fabric by the manufacturer and they couldn't get my dress to me until the day before the wedding. Of course, the wedding was out of town and I'd be on a plane by then. When I told them to just cancel the order, I had to get a lawyer on the phone before the refunded me the money for the dress.

In this case, it worked out. I was the only bridesmaid and both the bride and I liked the dress I found at the 11th hour in a rush for $50 better than the $400 one we had ordered. But my point is you're paying *them.* Get a date out of them. You're the customer.
  • UPDATE: I went in to the store the next day after posting my question and spoke with the owner of the shop. She swore to me that all the dresses except for one would be in by end of the month and that the alterations person wouldn't see any of us until 4-6 weeks before the wedding date. I'm peeved and will definately be going on yelp and every review site I can to try and warn other brides. At the end of the month if they're still not in I'm going to go back there and raise hell. I'm so frustrated because this was exactly what I didn't want to happen! Hopefully things will work out....I never pray, but I am now!
  • Unless alterations are included int he purchase price I would definitely not giving them any more business. Frankly I wouldn't trust them to complete the alterations adequately and in time for the wedding - and wouldn't want to risk it since they won't "touch them until 4-6 weeks before the wedding." F that!

The 4-6 weeks before the wedding for alterations sounds normal to me. The boutique I got my dress from did the first fitting 5 weeks out. Unless you wanted the dress majorly altered, it was guaranteed to be ready in less than a week. The seamstress used to do fittings earlier but she had problems with brides gaining or losing weight in the last few weeks and requiring more alterations.

  • 4-6 weeks before your wedding will probably be close to the end of this month anyway! They sound very unprofessional. I would definitely seek elsewhere for my alterations. Good luck!
  • IAWPP.  If your alterations aren't included in your purchase price I would demand to be given your dress as-is and take it to an outside tailor.

If the shop has been timely and professional I would agree with you, but seeing as they can't even get the dress in I would not trust them on a 4~6 week alteration schedule. Never mind the fact that they don't deserve a penny more from the op given the wretched customer service :)
