NWR-New Furbaby!!

Evening all! I know it has been a while since I have last posted. BF and I adopted a kitten yesterday and I am truly a very happy girl right now. His original name was Shore but after having him home for a few hours, his true name came out. His name is Loki and he is 11 weeks old. I have attached a few pictures.

Ugh.  I misread the title as "New Furby".  I need to go home.

Lol! I so don't blame you for reading the title as such. He's already gotten so many snuggles in a 24 hour span. He is one lucky kitty. And his name truly fits him.

  • The one thing I'm seriously not looking forward to about our wedding and my moving is this:

I have to rehome my two furbabies.  FI and I both hate it, but his apt is not at all pet friendly, and finding somewhere else is not an option.  :(

Aww. That sucks. I hope you find someone who can take them from you and take good care of them.

@mrsmorales2be Well, why don't you and your FI move somewhere pet-friendly?  I would rather live in a tent with my babies than in an apartment without them.
ETA you said "moving somewhere else is not an option", which was kind of vague and I'm curious.

  • he is adorable! Love the name! An dangit...now i want another cat.

  • @doeydo - due to a multitude of factors we have to keep his current apartment.  It's not ideal, but it is what it is.

  • seriously...I don't get not being "pet friendly" ...I mean there aren't apartments that ban CHILDREN...I mean really...there should be CHILDREN deposits! ....and I could NEVER EVER live someplace I couldn't keep my pets...THAT would "not be an option"

His name truly fits him. We had a list of names we had chosen and Loki just fit him. Especially after my BF left to bring his mom to an appointment and the little shit run upstairs and hid under our bed. And he pulled a Houdini with his enclosure last night.

  • I would live in my car before I would give up any of my pets. There is always another option.

There are circumstances where rehoming is, sadly, unavoidable.  I don't like it, I hate it, FI doesn't like it either, but that's the circumstances surrounding our getting married and my moving 8 hrs to be with him.  I will carefully select the family my babies will be joining.  I am not abandoning my furbabies, and insinuating that I'm doing so is hurtful.

OP, sorry this has turned into a thing.  People, can we please drop this here and not hijack this thread?

  • @mrsmorales2be I don't think any of PPs were trying to be hurtful.  Personally it would not be my choice, but if you plan ahead and responsibly rehome your babies, good on you.

    @lightningsnow, Loki is adorable!!!

Don't worry sweetheart. I know your heart is breaking over it. I've been there before myself and it is not easy. As long as you know the family they are going to will be the best that's all that matters. It isn't easy giving up an animal you love because of circumstances you can't control.

  • When we were married, my cat came with me.  The first morning after the honeymoon, DH woke me up with a scream!  Cat was sitting on his chest, nose to nose with him, as if to say "Who ARE you, and what are you doing in my mother's bed?"  That cat never did accept him.  Since then, DH has been completely converted to a cat person.  Our current big, orange long-hair adores him!

Have you ever seen a place that was rented by people who did not properly care for their pets?  It would be great if everyone were a responsible pet owner, but, sadly, this is not the case, and those irresponsible jerks are who makes some property owners feel that they need this rule.

Our first house in  1978 was the ugliest, smelliest house in Bowie, Maryland.  Nobody wanted it, except us.  It was in a great neighborhood, but as soon as the door opened, you smelled cat urine and dog pee on the wool carpet.  We tore out the carpet and put it out for the special trash pickup.  It rained that night, and the stench was embarrassing.  You could smell it a block away!  I scrubbed the cheap tile floor with bleach, but you could still smell the lingering effect for a few years whenever it rained.
We heard lots of stories from the neighbors about the previous owners.  At least we could afford a house in a nice neighborhood.  We were young, and put in lots of sweat equity (and new carpet!), and it was a nice place to start out family.

Yes. and I have also been in EQUALLY DISGUSTING apartments with children who weren't properly cared for or watched, walls and carpets are DESTROYED.

  • There are senior aparrtments that do not allow children after 8:00 PM.  This is inconvenient for the seniors who might have out-of-town family visiting them.  The kids can't spend the night with Grandma.
One man in my late mother's community was asked to leave when he married a younger woman (a LOT younger!)  and she became pregnant.
This same community did allow pets, but not children under the age of 12.

  • Awww he is so cute! We might be getting one too! A friend of ours had a kitten dropped off on their property and their older cats aren't too keen on adding a new member to their feline family. If they decide they cannot keep it FI says we can have her. If not I see a trip to the shelter in our near future.

Unfortunately, it is not illegal to discriminate in housing against people with pets.  But generally, it
is illegal to discriminate against residents because of their family makeup (e.g. children).  Children can absolutely be just as much of a nuisance, or more so, as pets.  But they have legal protection and the pets don't.

It pisses me off it's so hard to find an apartment that's cat-friendly, but if we had a little terror demon-child, no landlord could refuse to rent to us for that reason.  Bummer, but that's the way it is.
