tipping etiquette

Hey everyone, Does anyone know if I am supposed to tip the hair stylists at the trial as well as on the day? Does anyone have recommended amounts for the vendors? Also, any vendors you wouldn't normally tip?

Thanks

Re: tipping etiquette

  • I think it depends on if they're the owner or an employee.  So if I pay them, they get it all as owners I'm not so inclined to tip but if it's an employee, then they only get paid by the hour so I would tip them.  That's just my thought, what does everyone else think?

  • The cost of my trial is included in the price for my hair and makeup on wedding day and it's the owner that's working on me.  That said, I'm going to tip her both times.  I'm going back up to Vegas in a couple of weeks for the trial and if nothing else, she'll be paying for gas and parking to come to me and I'd like to at least make the gesture as a "thank you" for the good service.  I don't know if it's required but I would feel weird not tipping for hair and makeup, no matter what.

Hmm I never knew that about owner vs employee hairstylist. Is that the norm?

Yeah; the reason for that is the owner of a service-providing company typically prices their services so they can make a living; otherwise, they'd be taking a gamble every time they book a job as to whether it will be profitable or not, and no one does that.  However, employees in a service industry are often not paid as much and 'work for tips.'  Of course HMU is more of a skilled trade than driving a cab, for example, so I'm guessing most HMU assistants do get paid a livable wage regardless, but, it's still nice to tip just in case.  My wife tipped her HMU person, Francesca, and her assistant anyway though lol; she did a great job.
