Wedding Invitations & Paper

Is this a real thing?

So while perusing WW I found a huge thread about inviting celebrities to your wedding. I have heard of the thing that if you send something to Mickey & Minnie Mouse they send something or other back, but inviting musicians or actors? Also, just as something funny, there are people who say they don't invite celebrities because if they came it would overshadow their big day?It just seems really bizarre to me, but it seems very common over there?

I have heard of sending an invite to Mickey and Minnie and also to the President (you usually get a nice note back on official letter head, etc) but I have never heard of sending invitations to other celebrities (actors and singers).

And those that say they don't want to send invites to celebrities because if they show up it would over shadow them need to get a life and maybe deflate their head just a smidge.

  • I want to invite a bunch of people from RHOA to my wedding. I should get their information because I would love to just send them a damn invite for chuckles.

Apparently people do it.  I don't see the point, besides maybe getting a signature of the person back, but it is probably not them actually signing it and it's just copied on.

It's their signature but it may have been done with an autopen. It's a keepsake.

I sincerely doubt any celebrity is going to show up to a random wedding they were invited to.  They get that the hoped for response is an autographed photo.

  • I don't get it, but I'm not an autograph hound in general.
  • I've heard of this.

I guess if you really want the preprinted RSVP of "no thank you but have a great wedding" as a keepsake then you might as well go for it, but I don't see the point myself.  The celebrity in question usually never sees the RSVP, so it's not like you even have their personal signature or best wishes on it.

@mysticl, I have read about how Oprah once crashed a wedding she wasn't invited to but had heard about, I think because the couple were guests on her show.

I think people get an autographed picture, at least in some cases.  So if it's someone you are a fan of that's kinda cool.  Yes, it's probably handled by an assistant but if you have extra invites it's just the cost of postage to see if you get something back.

I googled the Oprah thing and it looks like she popped in for a few minutes and brought a gift to a couple of receptions.  That's not going to be the norm though.

It won't be the norm, but apparently she wasn't invited and while she was there, she "stole attention" from the couples because everyone went running over to her.  Kind of "gate-crasher AWish."  I remember it was controversial because of that.

Ok she crashed weddings, it was rude.  But she crashed the weddings as part of a tv show she was doing, that has nothing to do with people inviting celebrities to their wedding. My point was in response to the idea that some people don't want to invite celebrities because they are afraid they are going to show up and ruin their day.  Like I said before I sincerely doubt they are going to show up.  They have better things to do.

Hey, I wasn't arguing with you. If people want to invite celebrities who they have no relationship with just to get some response back that the celebrity in question probably never saw or heard about, that's certainly their privilege.  It just doesn't make sense to me.  But there is always the possibility that the celebrity, if it's a human being, will accept the invitation, however unlikely.

If Oprah showed up to a wedding, I would expect everyone at the reception to receive a gift hiding under their chair.

We sent an invite to the White House and got our congratulatory note in the mail today. I'm a geek, but I really like the note on the official White House stationary (including the seal). It will just end up in a wedding scrapbook but for now it is on our fridge :-) We did not send invitations to celebrities/actors/fake characters though. Just wanted the one note. We did invite the Lt. Governor of our state, but that is different-she is a good friend I've known for years. Unfortunately (or fortunately), she isn't able to attend. I would have hated to see her hounded at the reception (although I like to think our guests would be better than that). However, I do believe Governors/State Houses send the congratulatory note as well when they receive an invitation.
