At what point does one quit their job?

Seriously.

Is it after your hours are cut in half?
Or is it after you determine that you can do nothing right?
Perhaps when you discover that the nonprofit is hiring other people but are cutting your hours because of the "budget"?

Because all of that has happened in the last week.

  • Don't quit your job until you've found something new. It's always easier to find a job when you still have one.

But those all sound like good signs that it's time to move on.

I'm sorry that this is happening- and good luck!

Once you become unhappy and the job becomes work, it is time to leave.
    ROCK IS KING!!
  • If I were you, I'd start looking for a new job.

@vsgal Yeah...the job has been work for a while, but I really believe in what we do. So I was sticking it out.

@climbingbrideny I've applied to 5 since last Monday. At first I was just doing it on a whim, but now I'm focusing more on it.

@wandajune6 Yeah. I understand the staying until I have something else thing...it's just painful.

  • I'm the wrong person to ask, because I tend to just walk out the door the second I ask myself this question. Fearless, but a crap financial planner.

    Time to move on.
  • Time to quit.

I quit a few weeks ago because they hadnt given me a raise in 2 years and was insanely underpaid. Guess what....I got the raise hahah.

Maybe they will realize what they are losing?

  • You may be entitled to unemployment compensation if your hours are reduced. This is state administered so check with them.
  • I haven't quit a job without another one lined up since I was 17. But it does sound like now is the time to throw yourself into serious job hunting. Good luck!
  • I'd say it's time to seriously hunt. I stayed in a job where I was unhappy for too long--it ended up working out because connections I made there got me my current position, but it really screwed my finances to be working in such a low-paying gig for so long. I was raised to live within my means, no credit card balances, etc. but that just couldn't happen in my old job, and I wasn't in a position to move out of NYC either, so debt happened and I'll be crawling out for at least another year. Don't be like me! Leave sooner, not later!

  • When you get another job that fulfills you more.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.
  • I absolutely can't stand my job - I am taken advantage of, given the most responsibility with the least pay, can't do anything right, and am verbally harrassed by a co-worker on a regular basis. I have been applying for/interviewing for jobs for a about a year and still haven't found anything. It is SO frustrating but I am trying hard not to quit before I have another job lined up. :(

  • I think you are lucky to have the option.  If a teacher quits during the school year, she/he is effectively ending their teaching career.  They are breaking their contract, and will most likely never teach again.  A friend of mine went through this.  She is unable to find work anywhere near her former salary.  They are selling their house.  She still won't talk about it.
I was trapped in a teaching job with the principal from hell.  I had to see a doctor for medication to help me through the experience.  I stayed for the sake of my students, who were bonded with me.  It was awful.
Just remember that if you quit, you will get no unemployment benefits, should you need them.

  • I'm with PP - start looking for another one.

If you're unhappy enough/questioning it/contemplating it enough to be posting about it - its time to start looking.

But I also agree - its easier to find a position when you are currently employed. I hope it all works out for you!

  • After having been laid off and spending 6 weeks doing nothing, followed by 4 months of working a crappy temp job paying 1/3 of my former salary, followed by several months contracting at a decent place and hoping to get a permanent job offer, I would never leave voluntarily without lining up something else.

Even if they cut your hours and treat you bad, it's still better than no job at all.  Unemployment maxes out at around $330/week (before taxes) in most places.  That isn't going to cut it for long.

It takes time to find something else, and it sucks, but it sucks a whole lot less than not having a job at all.  Spend the hours that you aren't working focusing on finding the next thing.  They say it takes 10 applications to get an interview, and 5-10 interviews to get a job.  Applying to 5 spots is a start, but it isn't enough.

This. I really don't like my job right now either...I don't really like anything about it. What is my response? I do the best I can at work, give my 100 percent, and then apply like crazy to other opportunities. I've been looking for a few months, but because I still have a job and an income I have the luxury of time on my side. I can really focus on jobs that appeal to me and will do something for my career. It is hard though, but you'll find something.

I know that the smart thing is to keep my head down, show up every day, and do my job while applying elsewhere. And that's what I'm doing. And it is what I'll do until I find something else.

The goal is to get another 3-5 applications out there this weekend and hope that something comes from them sometime soon.

  • Good luck with your job-hunting!  That's a tough place to be, but knowing that you're taking steps to get out of it helps - sort of.  Good wishes, thoughts, vibes, prayers, whatever works for you heading your way!

    Thanks, everyone!

I had an email from one of my apps this morning - I've been "forwarded on"!

I know it isn't anything certain, but it gives me hope!

  • @YCMercedes, most non-profits are exempt from having to pay unemployment taxes and their employees therefore are not entitled to the benefit. My aunt went through this 2 years ago when the church she attended for 42 years and worked at for 5-6 "laid her off" and she discovered she wasn't entitled to unemployment.
