I need a hobby

I don't know what to do with myself now that the wedding and honeymoon is over. I find myself doing more around the house- but this is going to get expensive quick. I put a back splash up in the kitchen this weekend and bought a new mirror.

I have a sewing machine I need to learn how to use, but I'm not sure what to make with it. I have a lot of family members who quilt, but that's not really my style.

I also already have a planted fish tank that I spent a bit of time with every week.

How do you keep yourself occupied post wedding?

  • Knitting is awesome. Just saying. ;)

  • I'm not post wedding. But I read a lot, play the violin (when my tendinitis can take it), and we go hiking on weekends. I have always wanted to learn how to knit! If you have other interests, maybe find a way to volunteer? Like an historical society, or therapy dog program?

  • I color. Like in a childrens coloring book. It sounds crazy but it keeps me occupied when I dont want to do a bigger project. I also do puzzles and read.
I understand what you mean about being post wedding and honeymoon. There is now a space of time that used to be busy thinking about wedding stuff that is now free to do other things.
    Enjoy it!

Hello, life-twin. I used to play my violin when I was bored (before it was destroyed in Hurricane Irene). When I'm between wedding projects, I do a lot of cross-stitching. When we lived in an apartment with a balcony, I did a lot of gardening, too. I'm also a fairly voracious reader, so that takes up a lot of my "free" time as well.

  • I'm trying to flesh out a webcomic. and improve my drawing skills. Oh, and I ordered supplies to make a paper parasol wreath for summer.

And WoW. I do WoW. Perky Pug needs love.

  • Get a part time job?
    Go back to school?
    Volunteer...anywhere that strikes your fancy?
    Get pregnant?  ;)
  • Walk in to a Hobby Lobby or a JoAnn's fabric store and see what tickles your fancy.  I am amazed that you have the time!

I'm pretty busy during the week, but on the weekends... I'm bored. But it's also summer in Phoenix, so a lot of normal activities are totally out of the question now.

I'm reading "Born to Run right now" But I'm totally down for the next Knot reading club book!

Maybe I'll take up painting... I'm a little worried that will cost about the same as continuing to decorate the house though. But then again, I could decorate the house with what I paint.

  • I don't spend much if any time worrying about my wedding, so I imagine that won't change afterwards.  :)

Wow!  I can't play much anymore because my tendinitis has gotten really bad with all the typing in law school.  But I used to really enjoy playing in my spare time.

@Cookie Pusher I'm crushed about your violin for you.  I'm pretty attached to mine even though I can't play much.  And (maybe besides my e-ring) it's the most expensive thing I own.  I would not be a happy camper if it was ever damaged.

  • I am far too good at finding ways to be occupied (and often abandoning them halfway through.)

    • Take up a new craft -- go check out some craft books for the library or do some internet searches. Decoupage, mosaics, crochet, painting, etc.
    • Start a blog.
    • Study a new language.
    • Try cooking something new (canning? baking? pickling? home-brewing?)
    • Try out one of those "micro-jobs" sites.

I stopped REALLY playing it sophomore year of high school (I had to choose only one music course in HS because of science labs, and I opted to stay in choir because you had to be in choir to audition for school musicals), but my violin was always very special to me. Because of my size, a full-size was too large while a 3/4 was too small. My dad found one that was "defective" in that it was kind of in-between sizes and got it for pretty cheap. He paid to have it upgraded (new neck, new sound post, new scroll) when I was in middle school. It was one of the few things that was mine and only mine while I was growing up, and the first thing my dad ever bought for me. I cried for a long time after finding it water-logged and was pretty inconsolable when the back broke in half as it dried a few days later. I still have both of my bows, and won't likely ever get rid of them.

  • I've volunteered at a bunch of organizations over the years. I'd recommend starting with helping at events before jumping into a regular schedule. Favorites have included cooking at Ronald McDonald House, handing out water at marathons, manning political phone banks, and helping sort donated clothes at a women's shelter.

At the moment, I'm doing a lot of side jobs. I help people with resumes and job search skills on the side. I stopped searching for work a while back and now just take referrals. I also manage my friend/BM's business website. It's side work that generates minimal money and keeps me busy. I look it at it as my fund for stupid spending.

Don't force a hobby though. I have crocheting/knotting stuff that collects dust, a store credit for a sewing class at a JoAnn Fabrics that I've rescheduled several times, and an ill-conceived mosaic project in the garage. I'm convinced I'll do it all someday but lost interest.

Other option: help me with my ill-conceived wedding crafts! jk

New language- that's a good idea. I STILL can't speak my husband's native tongue. It's downright embarrassing. I have a book, I just have to put the time in.

Blog- I have two, I've been lazy about updating them. I used to blog all the time, but I've gotten kind of bored at it.

I've started reading more, which helps. I agree, I need to just go to the craft store and start something. I should call up my friend or cousin who both sew and learn how to use it, that's going to be a huge help. I know how to crochet but being in AZ... there isn't much use for it. I guess I could make blankets for babies at the hospital or something, but crocheting doesn't take all of my mind, I would still be on the couch watching tv while I crocheted.

    EH, I'll figure it out.
