Cocktail Hour Same Location as Reception

Our reception will be outdoors in the courtyard area of a B&B. There is a separate smaller space at the B&B where we could probably stage a cocktail hour, but it seems kind of a waste to have to pay for an extra bar set-up, extra tables and chairs, just to use it for an hour. I'm also not sure how the music would work, since we have a DJ during cocktail hour and he'd likely have to have an additional setup in the cocktail area.

Is it weird to have your cocktail hour and reception in the same space?

  • Ours was in the same space.

  • Not at all. Ours is in the same space. I'd say half of the weddings I've been to had the cocktail hour and reception in the same space.

  • Thanks for the help!
  • ours was in the same place. Although the bars were near the dance floor which was off to one side. That is where the high top tables were. So some people choose to hang out there, others were at their tables.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Not as weird as overextending your budget for an hour.  Enjoy the day and continue to be a price conscientious person, it will lead to a great life.
  • I've only been to two weddings that had them in a separate space and both times the separate space for cocktail hour was very inconvenient and the setup was annoying.

  • Ours was in the same space. I had never been to a wedding like this before ours- the rest had separate spaces that were usually too small for the crowd and I felt annoyed at being crowded and having no where to sit. It made the reception flow very well by having the cocktail hour in the same space as the rest of the reception. We began the reception by having the musicians begin the first dance. Everyone got the hint that the dinner portion was coming soon and found their seats.
  • Ours was in the same space as well.  I haven't been to many weddings where the cocktail hour and reception space were in different places, typically they always take place in the same location which is nice because then you don't have to worry about extra seating because people can just go and sit at their designated table if they want.

  • Thank you for all the feedback! I've only been to one reception that had a cocktail hour, and it was in a different part of the venue than dinner, so I wasn't sure what was normal.
