A woman in my neighborhood started a group for girls. I guess she had daughters in Girl Scouts and saw that children who couldn't afford the patches or uniforms weren't allowed to take part in the ceremony at the end of the year. It seemed wrong, so she started her own group for girls to get together and learn skills, be exposed to new things in their neighborhood, etc. This woman had a mentor when she was around 8-9 who took her under her wing and helped teach her a lot (she came from a pretty bad home life)
She is good friends with a friend of mine. As soon as I saw that she started the group, I reached out to see if there was any help I could lend. She asked me to come in to speak to the girls. She thought that it would be nice for them to hear from a female in the legal profession. Obviously I accepted immediately. I am going to go with my mom (it's important for them to see positive relationships between mothers and daughters) and I will speak about my career, schooling, etc. Then my mom and I will make homemade chocolates with the girls as our activity. I'm really excited about it.
Then I got a message from them today, apparently the local news wants to do a feature on the group. . . . .they picked the day i'll be there. AHHHHH! I'm not a fan of being on tv! I'm going to suck it up and do it though, because it'll get the girls noticed and helpfully help them expand the group!
