Handwritten Invitation

Is it wrong to hand write invitation envelopes and RSVP envelopes? I have very neat writing. I would prefer them printed but I can't seem to find a place that will print envelopes and I don't have the proper software to do them. My mother thinks it's cheap looking but I feel like it doesn't matter because it's just an envelope. I can't remember others wedding invitations let alone the envelopes. Can I get away with hand writing them?

Re: Handwritten Invitation

  • I actually think handwritten is better. I pay more attention to handwritten envelopes.
  • I've seen both. Don't have a preference really. I say go for it! I really doubt anyone would snub it :)
  • Handwritten is perfect.
  • Handwritten is actually the proper way to do it, so you're good!
  • Hand addressing your invitations is actually considered more correct.  If you have legible handwriting, I would go for it!
  • Perfect! Thank you! My hand may fall off at the end of this but at least no stress about how to print.
  • The above posters are 100% right. Preprinted is for business, handwritten for people.

You can do it! I finished my 132 invitations tonight, inner and outer envelopes all addressed by hand. Just take breaks!

  • It's not at all cheap looking; it's the proper way it's done. What a strange thing for your mom to say.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Maybe she's thinking it makes it look like they couldn't afford to have the invitations professionally done.

  • Handwritten is appropriate.

Yup this. And she thought it just didn't seem formal enough.
  • One of my bridesmaids has offered to hand write all of our invites (only about 45) using calligraphy. This saves us a ton of money. I love the way her handwriting is and I didn't even ask for her to help, she just offered it up!

  • I look at the envelope for about 1 second before I rip it up and throw it in the garbage so I really don't have a preference so do whatever you like best.

  • Handwritten is fine, but you you really don't need any kind of "software" to print envelopes... I printed all of mine myself in Microsoft Word. Took maybe an hour to print 75 or so.

Just open a new document, type out how you want it to look (size, color, font, etc), then highlight the text and click on "Mailings" at the top, then "Envelopes".

Then click on "Options" at the bottom to put in the envelope size (note: 6.4 by 4.5 is the minimum it lets you put, but it doesn't matter). You can change the margins if you want by adjusting the "From Left" and "From Top". I did mine at 1.5" from the left and 2.0" from the top.

Just print out a few test envelopes first until it looks right. Once you do a couple, you'll get into a groove and can knock them all out in no time.

Again, nothing wrong with handwritten, but personally, my penmanship is awful!
  • EDIT: I did my thank you notes at 1.5" and 2.0" margins; I think I did my invites at 3.0" and 2.5", but it depends on the size of the envelope.

You can cut some sheets of computer paper to the same size as the envelopes and use that for testing so you don't waste too many good envelopes.

Oh I know. By software I meant Microsoft word. My mothers computer doesn't have it and that's where the printer is. Too much work to find a laptop with word, hook up printer software etc just for envelopes. But thank you for the tutorial help - I wish we could gave printed them because 175 envelopes later and my hand was killing me! Lol
  • Most definitely! That's how I'm addressing all of our envelopes. :)
