Guys I have a heel spur

I thought it was a bruise. Got an X-ray yesterday after realizing that things should usually get better with time, not worse, and sure enough there's a little douchebag of a calcium deposit on my heel bone.

I am DISPLEASED with this development, not least because I'm supposed to be training for a triathlon. I'm also going to Europe in a week, so I would really prefer to be able to walk without pain.

I'm not even 30 and I feel like an old lady. HARRUMPH.

  • Oh no!  How long do those take to heal?

Depends? Evidently the actual bone spur just hangs out forever (it's possible to get surgery but rarely done, because the surgery hurts as much/more than living with it, plus they can always come back). It's inflammation near the spur that causes pain, probably from pounding the NYC pavement in flat, crappy sandals for too long. Supportive shoes are in my future. Also some PT--hopefully I'll have a better sense of the timeline once I get in to see one.

  • I heard if you wear high heels it helps?
  • Ouch!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Interestingly, I popped on a pair of high-tops with a tiny wedge yesterday, and it DID feel better. From what I've read the ridiculously expensive orthotics and heel cups that people make for this condition are meant to elevate the heel a bit (just a bit--something tells me 4-inch stilettos are probably not ideal!).

  • That sucks! My dad had heel spurs quite a few years ago.
  • Oh no, that sucks :( I'm sorry to hear that. Can you still train for your triathlon at all?

I can definitely swim. I have a feeling I can bike, since most pressure there is on the ball of the foot. I CAN run (especially if I go fast, on my toes) but something tells me that doing anything with full weight and high intensity on the foot is probably out for a bit.

I will be furious if I can't do it at all! I'll be sad if I have to walk part of the running leg.

  • My dad had a heel spur, he cut a small hole in the heel of his running shoes where the spur was. Helped immensely, but then dude was wearing a shoe with a hole in it. If you've got some cheapos, I'd give it a shot.

  • Those cute little flats and flip flops got me, too. I've had plantar fasciitis for years. Now, I only wear shoes and sandals with built in arch supports and heel cups. I can walk in my sensible Clarks all day. Also, there are great inserts and many comfort brand shoes available Footsmart.com

  • FI just did his first 70.3 Ironman and with 7 weeks left of training, we were running a half marathon, and he ended up with 2 stress fractures. Well, he refused to not train - so he swam, biked on his indoor trainer, and (the part that might be helpful to you) took up deep water running. I never knew this existed & surely it's not the same as running (and some people might look at you funny in the pool) - but it's a great alternative when you have to stop running to let an injury heal!

  • OH, no fun :( I hope that it goes away!
