Summer Wedding

Hey all!  so I'm getting married next month (!!!) in NJ... it will most definitely be hot, we're keeping the ceremony extremely short (I'm hoping, like, twenty mins if that) but since it will be outside, do you think I should purchase some water bottles and have one for every seat? or a basket of them when the guests walk out? or just forgo it since the ceremony will be relatively short... thank you!

Re: Summer Wedding

  • How hot are we talking? I don't know anything about NJ, just the 100+ weather down here in TX. I think water would be nice since a lot of people get there early, so 20 minutes could be 45 minutes for some people. You could just have them sitting out in pretty galvanized tubs or something.

  • It would be a really nice gesture to have water there, but not required. I know I would appreciate it as a guest.
  • YES. Please have water bottles. My friend got married in an outdoor ceremony in July in NY. She was running late (not her fault, the limo screwed her) and we were sweltering. We ended up sitting outside for almost an hour. She had coolers full of bottles of water. It saved us.
  • Our ceremony was outside in July - we had coolers with water and provided shade for guests who arrived early. I think it's a good idea.

  • excellent! I thought as much, just wanted to get others opinions.... thanks!
  • Yes, please have water bottles.  I'm sitting in my apartment in Jersey right now and my outdoor thermometer reads 95 degrees.

Please note, I'm not trying to bash you in any way, I'm just trying to give you some perspective:

I live in PA, and for the past 2 weeks it has been in the 80's- some days close to 90- with near 100% humidity each day.  I can't imagine this trend diminishing any time soon, and I can't imagine NJ would be much different.

You really, REALLY, need to rent a tent or tents to provide shade for your guests during the ceremony, if you haven't already done so.  I would not want to sit out in the sun right now for 20mins straight- it's too damn uncomfortable, and I definitely wouldn't want to do it in nice wedding attire.

Also, do you have any shade or cover for you, your groom, and your wedding party?  Because they are not going to want to stand around for 20mins in the sun either.  The guys in suits/tuxes are going to be hot, gross, sweaty messes by the time the ceremony is over.  Hell you're going to be a sweaty mess, depending on the style of your dress ;-)

I'd hate to have to take formal pictures in clothing and makeup I sweated through :/

It depends on where in NJ. NW, it hasn't been as hot, though there have been more rain showers. Most of last week wasn't really that bad, IMO. Most days were low 80s with only a couple of days of high humidity. I worked outside on Friday, and while it was hot out in the sun, it wasn't humid.

That being said, we're also getting married in NJ next month. The area where the ceremony is in is fully shaded. We have fans and cold bottled water for our guests. Better to have it just in case it ends up being super hot than not having it and guests being miserable.

  • Only thing I wanted to add is I would highly recommend a stack of paper towels or napkins with the water bottles to dry them off, cuz it's annoying as heck to have condensation/melted ice from the cooler drip all over nice clothes.

Also... to blot a shiny/ sweaty face.
  • My FIs friend had an outdoor wedding in August in OR. It sucked. We knew the venue and thought it would be indoors, because it has an indoor venue, but found out it was actually outdoors when we got there. I got sunburnt because I hadn't brought sunscreen and there was no shade and not enough seats, but the bar was open and we had 3-4 drinks before the (late) ceremony started. Water would have been cheaper but they only had tap, so alcohol it was!  We would have a hard time if there was nothing to drink.

I totally agree with this. My H would be absolutely miserable and I wouldn't be happy about it.
  • One park wedding I went to had bins of water bottles at the site that nobody was touching until half an hour after the ceremony was to start. Then the flower girl started passing them out and everyone was so thankful to have them. It wasn't even 80 degrees, but having sat in the sun for an hour, we were all dehydrated.

Thank you for all your opinions, we are taking formal pictures prior so no one should be too sweaty and gross and there is already shade, but I'm going to tent the area as well, since I'd rather be safe than sorry. The paper towel sis also a great idea... ! Also, we are getting married at 630 pm..I'm not trying to give people heat stroke!!
