Invitation/RSVP timing.

I've read invitations should be mailed 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding. Is this fairly accurate?

Also, what is an appropriate RSVP deadline? Two weeks before? Three weeks before?

Re: Invitation/RSVP timing.

  • 6-8 weeks is standard.  I'm okay up to 10 weeks.  More than that is too early in my opinion.

RSVP date should be 5-7 days before the date the venue needs final numbers. That way you can track down the inevitable lost or just plain not returned RSVPs.

Hopefully your venue doesn't have some stupid far out date they need numbers.  It should be from 3-14 days from the event date.   Any longer you should try to negoiate,

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I've always heard 6-8 weeks for wedding invitations. Maybe even 10 weeks if most people are out of town. The RSVP deadline usually coordinates with the catering/venue deadline.  My venue needed a head count 2 weeks before the wedding so I set my RSVP date almost 4 weeks before the wedding. From what I've heard and seen 3 weeks is pretty common for RSVPs.

  • 4-6 weeks is cutting it a little close.  I've always heard from 6-10.

  • We sent ours out 10 weeks before the wedding, since over half our guest list was OOT. Our caterer needed a final count 3 weeks before the wedding so our RSVP date was 4 weeks before.

  • 6-8 weeks is usually about right. Says the woman who just ordered her invitations 11 weeks out. I do not have my shit together right now.

  • It depends! I'm having a destination wedding in Mauritius and I live in Canada while FI lives in UK for the time being so we sent all invitations 12 months prior to wedding date and gave them 8 months to RSVP so they can figure out time off work and flights/budget etc. For everyone who's already in Mauritius they'll be getting their invitations 16 weeks prior to wedding date since my venue needs a final headcount a whole month before wedding date.

  • 6-8 weeks for invitations. We set the rsvp date for7 days before numbers are due. Some people will actually send in their rsvp the day it's due.

This is bad advice.  Sending your invitations 12 months before the wedding date?  Horrible idea.  RSVP date 4 months before the wedding?  Also a horrible idea.  STDs were invented for situations like yours.  Also, if you sent all invitations a year before your wedding, what is this second set of invitations 16 weeks prior to the wedding?

I hear what you're saying and that is why I said "it depends" when I started my post. I did a virtual STD.

Well, the way it is for us is that I'm originally from Mauritius but currently live in Canada. My fiance lives in UK. We have friends and family ALL OVER the world and I really mean all over. And they are all coming to Mauritius for this wedding. The venue and everything else has to be secured a year+ in advance. When a wedding is so far away (it is quite remote, check on Google), it is custom to send invitations 12 months before the date, if it's already set. That allows plenty of time for everyone in all those different countries to figure out time off work, budget for flights and hotels etc. So far we have had all positive feedback and RSVPs from guests and they have thanked us for letting them know so far in advance!

As for the second batch (16 weeks), we are sending it out a little earlier because we are getting married in January which is full summer and vacation time in Mauritius, so it just gives a little extra time if people were planning to go on holidays somewhere to decide if they wanted to attend the wedding or not.
