Finding an officiant...for an out of state wedding

So long story short, we are currently living in Nebraska but I'm from Colorado and that's where the wedding will be.

The first hurdle is that we aren't sure if we should look into a local officiant and then pay for them to travel or should we try and find someone in Colorado and then we travel there. Has anyone done either of those or has better suggestions?

Second hurdle is that we aren't religious but are spiritual. We will not be getting married in a church and are trying to find someone that would be able to fit the "spiritual" vibe of the wedding. We could also do a secular officiant too, like a marriage counselor who is also ordained.

Thoughts ladies?

  • We didn't get married out of state, but we did get married several hours from where we live (in the same state), so planned remotely. I used TK's vendor list. Just do the vendor search by the zip code of where you're getting married. That's how we found our officiant. We made sure they could do an outdoor wedding. We even found one who was willing to let us write our own ceremony.

  • I'm getting married out of state and since we didn't want a religious ceremony, we asked my brother to get ordained. It's cheap, easy and legal (in most states) to get ordained online, so you could go that route if you have a friend or family member that you think would be a good fit.

  • You should plan to find an officiant where you'll be getting married. Officiant laws vary significantly state to state, so you can't be sure that a person who can legally officiate weddings in Nebraska is also legal in Colorado.

Just as an FYI, Colorado is one of only two states that don't require an officiant at all (Pennsylvania is the other). Instead, you can "self solemnize" your own wedding. More in the blue box here. We married ourselves in PA and it was awesome.
  • If you contact the office in Colorado that issues marriage licenses for the area you are getting married in, they may be able to provide you with a list of officiants in the area.

  • Look into wedding websites, check TK local board (if the area has one), or possibly check the county website and contact a JP. You could also check into having a friend/family member be qualified as a wedding officiant.
