Gift question about giving money as a guest at a wedding next week...

So, the wedding is of a good friend of mine from high school and his FI. They are both teachers, and currently live in Shanghai teaching English to Chinese students. They are flying back to the U.S. to get married. I asked my friend a few months ago in an email if they had a registry, as I could not find one online. They do not due to their current situation (the program only lasts a few years, and they do not know where they will end up after that). He told me "No gifts, but feel free to make a donation to a charitable cause in our honor." (I know, not recommended, but that's what I was told).

I was still considering bringing a card with U.S. money in it to the wedding, but I want to make sure that this would still be acceptable, given that they would have to most likely either use it here before returning to China or have it converted to Chinese currency. I do not know where they are going on their honeymoon, if they are even going on a honeymoon right after the wedding, or how long they will remain in the U.S. after the wedding. Should I figure out how to have it converted to Chinese currency before giving it to them? Or is it acceptable to give them U.S. money (either cash or a check)? What do you ladies think? Thanks!

  • Giving them US money is just fine.  Considering they are coming back to the states for the wedding they are probably going to be exchanging money anyhow.

  • I would give USD$.  My friend lives in Japan right now (her husband is stationed there) and they keep their US accounts open and active. Most of their funds are in it. It pays a few monthly bills direct withdraw (like storage unit).

When she comes home to visit, she withdraws from her US account. She doesn't convert funds..it's costly.

  • @OnionBreath, I had a feeling it might be costly, which is why I wasn't sure if this would fall under a similar category of Honeyfunds that take a portion of the gift money. Thank you, that's reassuring!

  • Currency conversion is not like honey funds. You're good.

  • I agree, just give cash. They will figure out the best way to manage the funds.
