Tahiti/Fiji in late December

Has anyone been to either destination in late December? I know it's their rainy season, but I'm wondering if it literally rains all day or just in spurts? Just curious to hear about anyone's experiences. Thanks!

Re: Tahiti/Fiji in late December

  • I was in Fiji in December a few years ago. I have not been to Tahiti in December, but I have been there several times during their low season. It rains off and on, mostly in the afternoon and evenings. I'd say that it doesn't really rain more, but just when it rains, it rains a little harder. I noticed the same in the Cooks. We had lovely weather there during low season except for one day. It poured for a few hours, but was gorgeous afterwards.

FWIW-I was just in Tahiti during high season last year and the weather was no better than low season.

  • Thanks @Jells2dot0! I don't think that would bother me too much.  I guess it's going to be that much harder to narrow down honeymoon choices!
  • Let me know if you have any other questions. I've been all over the South Pacific, Caribbean, and Indian Ocean.

  • Thanks again! Do you have any thoughts on the Maldives or Bali? Any other places you would recommend? I'm not too interested in the Caribbean (we went to Cancun last year and FI thinks it would be too similar), but other than that we're pretty open!
  • I was in Tahiti in late November, and it was HOT.  No rain that I can recall.  If it did, it was overnight.  But I just remember it being really hot, especially in Bora Bora.
  • I am planning a trip to the Maldives right now. We're planning on going late next year after my cancer treatment is done. From what I have seen so far, it's significantly more expensive than Tahiti or Fiji. Granted, I was looking at business class air from London-Male, but the tickets are ~$8000. The air to London in premium economy is another ~$3000. However, the rooms are pretty expensive as well. Velaa starts at $1900/night and Cocoa Island started around $1200/night. Cheval Blanc was $2600! Ha! Even with using hotel points for London and the W Maldives, I am still looking at a $20k+ trip.

The difference with the Maldives versus Tahiti is the private island experience. Tahiti has a few resorts that are truly private island (The Brando, Le Taha'a) but not quite as exclusive as the Maldives. Fiji has quite a few private island resorts and they will be smaller than what you'll find in the Maldives or Tahiti. The Maldives will also have more luxurious and spacious OWBs. They are a bit more expensive, of course. Fiji only has one resort than has OWBs and I don't recommend them. I preferred their pool villas (LikuLiku). The Maldives are also more isolated. In Moorea or Bora Bora, you have the option to explore more than just the resort.

I have not been to Bali, but I believe it has a nice mix of luxury resorts and cultural experiences. It's also pretty inexpensive once you get there.

  • Also, the rest of the Caribbean is nothing like Cancun!!! Check out the British Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla, St. Barths and Antigua. All have very high end luxury resorts. I like doing the all inclusive thing in Cancun/Riviera Maya, but it's not something you should judge the rest of the Caribbean by!

  • JoanE2012: We live in the SW, so I'm not too worried about the heat. Although, we only have to worry about a dry heat.

Jells2dot0: Thank you so much for all your help! You've certainly given me some super helpful advice!
  • I went to Tahiti in January a few years back.  It was amazing weather.  I think it rained for 20 minutes.  It was hot, but not unbearable.
  • I would super recommend the Maldives instead during that time period... if $ is not an issue.
The weather would be a lot better in the Maldives then.
Think of it like secluded Tahiti.
  • @SwlDpo- Maldives is on our list of possibilities, so maybe I will take a closer look. Thanks!
