Has anyone hired a DJ and then regretted it?

Hi to all the knotties that have gotten married in Vegas.

We're not huge dancers and my biggest fear is that I'll hire a DJ for Joe's and no one will dance. Anyone else have these fears and have a successful reception with DJ?

We're got a wide range of ages, 12 in their 20s, 12 in their 50s and 6 that are 75+ so I don't know what to do...

Thanks!
Kris

  • We had a DJ at Joe's and everyone danced! From my 16 year old cousin to my 75 year old Aunt!! We had a blast!!

  • We are not huge dancers either, so we opted to skip this sort of thing at our vegas reception. I kind of feel like there is so much to do and see in Vegas, why waste a whole night in a ballroom/restaurant?? We are having dinner at Phil's Italian Steakhouse, then strolling on down to The Linq and taking a ride on the High Roller. By the time that's over it will be about 8:30/9ish and the old folks can go back to the hotel. We will probably stay and hang out at the Linq for a while longer as they have arcades and stuff there and we will have our teenage kids with us so that's perfect. Then around 10 we will drop the kids off back at the hotel and go bar hopping. There are dozens of amazing bars in LV.
  • Still struggling with this.  Do I want a traditional reception with dancing or just dinner and then another activity like @myriah505 is doing?

Anyone hire a DJ and not have much dancing?

Anyone not hire a DJ and wish they did?

Thanks,  sorry to ask again but I cannot make up my mind on this one and need help!

  • We are having our reception-y stuff in-suite and just making a playlist on our ipod.  We will just set it to random and what happens, happens.
  • It seems like you know your crowd pretty well, and if they are not big dancers I would say don't waste your money on a DJ. I think it's more fun when your wedding reflects you and your fiancé's personalities, instead of following the traditional recipe for a wedding. It is Vegas after all! We are having our reception at Joe's as well, and I plan on renting a dance floor and running a playlist over the speaker system. No DJ.
  • I agree with what doughty said. If you find ppl look like they're wanting to dance, you've got the iPod option. You could also use the money to hire some sort of uniquely vegas entertainer instead. I was in the same predicament and ultimately went with a Dj but it's a know your crowd thing. My group loves to dance.

  • Thanks for all the feedback, we've talked it through and talked to my grown daughter, who without hesitation said thumbs down to the DJ.  So that's what we're doing, we're skipping the DJ but are going to do a party bus strip tour after dinner instead.   I may also do some sort of entertainer too.. that's still TBD.

I've already looked at a lot of photographers for the tour and party bus companies, but need to make some decisions and look at the reviews/photos again.

It does feel good to have the DJ decision made.
