White Christmas Lights

Hi Knoties!

Our reception hall has ceiling with about 8 wooden beams attached to it. I was thinking that it would look really cool to attach white christmas lights to the beams for the reception. The beams are about 52 feet across and I would like to have the lights swagged. I'm having trouble finding cheap christmas lights that are the appropriate length. The best deal I have found so far is 34 feet sets for $7.80 a piece (which means I would have to buy 16 of them since they wouldn't reach the whole way across). That's pretty expensive. Any ideas of where to get them cheaper? Also, would it look weird to do every other beam? The beams are fairly far apart to begin with and I don't know how that would look. Here is a picture of our reception venue:

  • I'm not sure when your wedding is, but if you have a Christmas Tree Shop near you, I'd check there. I've gotten good deals on lights from there, so it might be worth looking into. The price you mentioned above is a pretty dang good deal though.

  • I think the only way to get much cheaper than what you've found would be yard sales and Craigslist.

  • Check that the venue would even allow you to attach something to the beams. Many won't.
  • Ditto Mercedes on checking with the venue first. Then... I wouldn't swag them, I think they'd look much nicer straight across. You wouldn't need as much length that way.

When is your wedding? If it's after this Christmas, you could look for them to go on sale near/after the holiday.

  • I agree with skipping the swag but I would then cover them with rolls of tulle, can be had at Dollar Tree.
  • Honestly, I would skip the lights all together.  I don't really think they will add that much to the room and the money can be better spent elsewhere.

  • $7.89 sounds pretty reasonable for the lights.

Maybe ask around and borrow some from friends.

But it seems like an awful lot of time, energy, and money to do something that probably won't make or break the decor.
  • When is your wedding? If you can wait until after the Christmas season, you'll get them for a steal. (or plan ahead like we did- wedding on 12/21/14 so we bought at last year's clearance). I got 100ft sections for $2. Otherwise, check Craigslist to see if anyone's selling- it'll definitely be cheaper than that!
  • Our wedding is a month from tomorrow, so unfortunately we will not be able to look into clearanced lights. We are going to try the Craigslist idea- thanks friends!
