Marriage Certificates - how many copies do I need?

The hot topic made me realize I haven't ordered the copies yet... how many do we need?  I was only going to order 2.

Also, does it matter if I order a certified copy or a certification?  I have to specific which and not sure if it matters.

Thanks!

I ordered three just to be safe since I knew I had to send one with my passport and I needed one for my license and work.

I got 3. One for the safe deposit box, one to send away for name change reasons and one to have at home.

I got two certified copies and so far that has been enough.  I'll have to mail one when I change my passport but I'm waiting a few months to do that anyway.

I'm not sure what the difference is between certified copies and a certification, you want to be sure you get something with a raised seal (which a certified copy definitely has.)

I only got 2 and didn't have any problems. Nobody required me to send it to them, except when I do my passport, and then I"ll still have one let. And worst case scenario, I drive to the town hall and buy another copy for $7.

The certified ones have the raised seal, thats the only difference. A lot of places let me scan and send them, which I was surprised about, but it helped out a lot.

JCG - When you send it with your passport they will send it back with your old one. I couldnt believe how organized they were with that too.

Crap. I read this after I ordered just 1 extra.

I only ordered 2 and I actually received them already (the same week I mailed away for it). I was told that most places I will actually go to in person and you do get the one for the passport back. :)

I'm just curious, where are you all ordering these copies from? Don't you have to go to the town hall and pick up the copies in person? What do you need to mail them to show proof of identity??
The town I got married in wouldn't even tell me over the phone if the certificate was ready, they needed me there in person with ID to pick them up.

We don't need to go in person. I have to send a copy of my driver's license along with the application and check. This is in Franklin Township in Somerset. It's $20 for the first copy and $5 for additional copies.

This - except it's actually $20 for all certified copies (no matter how many you get) - I had to pay $40 for 2. :/

Uh oh. Really? At first I thought it was $20 each, but I swear the application said $20 for the first one and then $5 after. And then of course I just sent it today. Thanks for the info!

that's weird.. I guess every town has their own rules, which is why it is SO important to check with your town, and don't rely on what people tell you here.
$20 is a lot for copies in my opinion!

You would pick up (or order) the certificate copies from the town you got married in.
As I said above, EVERY town is different and has their own rules, so you need to call the town hall and ask them if they require you to pick it up, or if you can order the copies and have them mailed to you, as well as how much the copies cost, etc.
As far as I know, no towns mail you a letter when it is ready, or at least none that I've heard about.

ETA: It seems to take about 2 weeks before it is ready, but just call them to confirm, etc.

<div>I think the $5 is only for a COPY. $20 is for an original - I wanted 2 originals with the raised seal - did you just want 1 original and 1 copy?</div>
