Reception Idea

Would it be odd to have a carnival themed wedding indoors? I was thinking of having some classic carnival games (ring toss, the dart balloon game thing, etc), serve carnival style foods, possibly hire a face painter, and things of that nature, but that seems more like an outdoor style wedding. I am in love with the idea of the carnival, I just don't know if it really works indoors. Am I over-thinking this? Opinions?

Re: Reception Idea

  • Honestly, I love your "outside the box" thinking, especially if you are not a "traditional" bride.  If you are thinking that it might not be indoor enough in style, but you still want your guests to have fun playing games, you might think about a casino theme instead.  Either way, are you thinking about having prizes for winners?  Also, I might skip the face painter.  Kids really love it, but the grease paint feels annoying after a bit of time on an adult.

  • Well, this is me, but I think some of this needs to be saved for an actual carnival as opposed to a wedding.

That said, I do think you can incorporate some elements of a carnival, such as a photobooth, perhaps a caricaturist, streamers and buntings and other decor elements, and carnival foods like popcorn, cotton candy, funnel cakes, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, etc.  (Just have some healthy food offerings too!)

But I would ditch the face-painting-it's a bad idea if the event is in any way formal and your guests have gotten dressed up for it-especially over makeup jobs.  Also, I'd skip the games.  Those games, especially indoors, could be dangerous, and you might have to buy extra insurance as well as making sure your venue is okay with it.

Also, your guests, when they accept your invitation, are probably just expecting to eat, drink, mingle, and perhaps dance.  That's really all you need by way of entertainment for grownups.  It will still be fun.
  • I would go caricaturist as opposed to face painting. And the games indoors might prove difficult, but I definitely like the carnival food idea.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Can you elaborate on what kinds of games?  Who will be running them?

This sounds like a really fun idea and I don't think it needs to be outdoors to be cool.  The caricaturist would definitely be more appropriate than face painting.

  • I think it could work indoors IF you found the right venue. While some people don't prefer out of the box weddings, I think they work as long as guests know what to expect.
  • I've worked a lot of kid/family events and there was usually a face painter at my station.  We never had any grownups get their faces done, just kids. And at a wedding parents may not want to risk them getting the makeup on their good clothes (if you're inviting kids).  I really like the caricature artist idea.

If you have games you need people to staff them so that could end up getting a little expensive. There are some games that can work indoors but a big question is will your guests play them?  I love carnivals and love, love, love the food. I rarely play the games because they are all rigged.

  • I'm not big on themes, but I think it could be done well. There are lots of cute pictures. Love the lights and umbrellas in this one...

  • I really like the caricature idea, and would add a photo booth to that with carnival style props that don't involve face painting.
  • I can see how the face painting could get out of hand. Caricatures would be fun as well.
As far as who would run the games, I have quite a few teenage cousins that would be more then willing to watch the games, which I was thinking would be mostly outside.
    Photobooth=Amazing.
Lauderdale Pink, the casino idea is also very good. What kind of food would that be though?

  • Food - Think of lots of passed items on trays, hot and cold, and a couple of display tables with finger foods (small sandwiches, veggies, fruits, cheeses, crackers, cookies, etc.).  If passed foods get too pricey, then just stick with the display tables and maybe add some items in chafing dishes (pastas, etc).
