  Please don't conduct relationships via facebook (or texts).  If you're inviting him to your wedding, I'm assuming you're close enough to ask a simple question.  Pick up the phone, say
  
  "Hi, *friend's name*.  *Fiance's name* and I are sending out our invitations.  We want to make sure we include *girlfriend's name* and get the spelling correct on the invitation."
  
  If he says they are no longer together, you reply with "Oh, I'm sorry to hear about that.  We really ought to catch up more often.  Are you seeing anyone else who you would like to bring to the wedding?"
  
  Really, it's not that intrusive.  I've had friends ask me and I only assumed they wanted to be a good friend and be inclusive, not intrusive.  Just ask.

  Just call or text your friend and ask them if they are seeing anyone because you would love to invite them both to your wedding.

  Don't let anxiety get to you. Write the question down on a piece of paper beforehand so if you get twisted up, you can just refer to the paper.
  "Hey Cousin, are you still seeing *that girl you were with last year?"

  I'll have to do this with a couple of my cousins.  I'm sure they'd be happy to tell me if it means they get to bring this person along to my wedding.
