Tux/Suit Help!

Hi everyone!

My fiancé has his heart set on wearing a dark gray/charcoal suit or tux to our wedding which I think will go perfect with my bridesmaids teal dresses.  However, my dress is ivory.  My question is, will an ivory shirt for him match his charcoal gray suit or will it look dingy?  I've seen pictures of the charcoal gray suits but not with an ivory shirt.

Any advice would be helpful!!

I had an ivory dress with cafe underlay (Allure) - so very far from white and my groom wore a black tux with white shirt. It looked great - he looked classic. My dress did not look dingy at all. Our pictures looked great.

Personally, I think ivory shirts with suits/tuxes look dingy/yellowed.

  • Stick with the white shirt for him. He doesn't have to exactly match your dress, and the majority of people will look at an ivory dress and see "white".

  • Thanks for your help.  I'm thinking of bringing my dress with us to the tux place to check out the shirts against my dress.

They won't be the same. White is white and ivory is ivory.

I think you're looking at this wrong. No one is going to be looking at the two of you and compare his shirt to your dress (as you plan to do at the tux place). They're going to be looking at "the bride" (the whole package) and "the groom" (the whole package). Here's a pic from our wedding. See what you think:

  • You are probably right.  I'm just thinking of my older Italian aunts who would be doing that, haha.  But honestly, do I don't need to worry about what they are thinking..nope!
  • My dress was a very yellow ivory. I looked at the ivory shirts at MW and they were gross. DH wore a white shirt and even against my very not white dress it looked great. I am not a fan at all of the ivory shirts. They just don't look right IMO.

Thats how I feel...I've only looked online so far but all the ivory shirts look dirty but you know what "everyone" says ivory dress...ivory shirt

That was the line that MW gave us. I think that they do that to rent more ivory shirts. If the guys (including the groom) are wearing vests, what color are the backs of the vests? If they are white, doesn't that invalidate the point that ivory and white don't go together?

  • We haven't actually looked yet but I will check out the back of the vests...good point!

My dress is ivory/champagne color and my bridesmaids are wearing grey dresses thus we chose to go with grey tuxedos for everyone. We are actually doing an ivory shirt and vest for the groom and yellow for the guys as our colors are grey and yellow. We went through American commodore tuxedo and I didn't think it looked awful.

  • from what I'm hearing from friends and message boards is that it really depends on the store and their variety of ivory shirts. Thanks again for everyones thoughts!
