On pants & being picky.

This weekend FI & best man, and I went shopping for groom & groomsmen apparel.

FI & BM are both picky about clothes. Luckily, we found the perfect gray dress pants at Express and thought, "That was easy!" until FI says, "Wait a minute. I don't think they carry large enough sizes for GM #4."

We all stopped. Sure enough, GM #4 is barely-too-big for Express clothing.

We hit up a few other stores (Macy's & Kohl's) but couldn't find anything FI & BM liked --- at all. I really don't like the idea of having FI & GM in different pants, but we're hard-pressed to find something FI & BM like somewhere other than Express.

Any suggestions? I mean, we could kick GM #4 out of the WP or tell him he has to lose weight before the wedding. (Kidding, of course.)

Give the groomsman a pair of pants to duplicate in his own size. I'm sure he can find gray dress pants that will be quite close to the other guys. Likely, no one will notice or care if his are slightly different.
  • I mean, aren't gray pants gray pants? It's probably possible to find a big & tall version that is close enough to the same color/style that it won't be noticeable, then the rest of the guys can wear the Express ones. I feel like men's pants aren't that different from each other, plus everything looks different on different bodies anyway.

  • Maybe try similar places? Would jcrew have pants that look like the pants you found at express? I think pants are evil. It took me 15 pairs of jeans to finally find ones I like. If all else fails I think you should let them have different pants. I don't think anyone will notice the difference. Good luck!

  • This stinks. What if your FI and BM wore the pants from Express and then the other two groomsmen wear pants from Macy's. It would look more "planned" this way and people may just assume that BM was supposed to stand out along with your FI. Also, this way, GM #4 isn't the only one in different pants.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Otherwise, how about Men's Wearhouse? They probably won't be as stylish but they carry a ridiculous range of sizes.

That stinks. Have you tried Jos A Bank? They have about a bazillion different grey pants. You might be able to find a close enough match that you wouldn't be able to tell, especially if they have the same front (flat vs pleated) and bottom (cuffed vs not).

(ETA: just have to wait for the right sale. We waited for a 75% off online orders sale to buy all our guys' suits, and they're paying FI back.)

    They don't; I checked.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on NYCMercedes & SaraBrideSoon's advice to have GM #4 purchase an almost-identical pair from another store? Would that seem rude & too Mean Girls-y like, "YOU CAN'T SIT WITH US?"

FI & BM are too picky to shop elsewhere. We tried a few other places, but only one compared & the only pants they had that were deemed wearable by them are too dark of a gray.

Does GM #4 need to know where the other dudes bought their pants? Can't it be, "Hey, we are getting flat-front [or whatever description here] pants in this color gray. Go find the same thing"?

Oh my god, tell them if the color is that important, BM should get some spanx and resign himself to wearing highwaters! hahahaha

I think this may very well be a case where the stereotypes ring true and guys don't care as much about this as girls might. Ask GM4 if he cares if all the other guys wear Express and he wears whatever else. Do GM 2-3 want the Express pants too, or do they not care? If the groom and BM are the only ones wearing Express pants and the other guys are in whatever grey pants they like, I don't think it would look weird or seem exclusionary at all.
