Recommend your washer/dryer

We're leaving ours with our old house, and need new ones for the new house. DH had misgivings about front-loaders based on things he's heard. (Also, he complained about bending down which made me laugh because I do 95% of the laundry, but whatever. I guess it's an issue the six times a year he does a load.) So then I looked into the agitator-less top-loaders, but regardless of brand or model, there always seem to be complaints that they don't clean as well or even damage the clothes. As luck would have it, this month's Consumer Reports featured washers and dryers, but the models they recommended seem to get crap reviews elsewhere. So I'm willing to buy whatever anyone here tells me to. Now, go:

Re: Recommend your washer/dryer

  • Oh, and if you have a front loader, do you find the pedestals helpful, or not?  I would most likely not use them for storage, purely to raise everything up.
  • we have whirlpool duet high efficiency. they are front loaders. do not recommend:

we have to leave the door open all the time so we don't get mold. irregurdness, i still have to take a toothbrush and a cup of bleach and clean the gaskets every once in a while.

we are now trying other recommended things, like using less detergent and running an empty hot water wash (we wash in cold water only).

  • We have an LG front loading washer.  I really like it.  I don't have a pedestal for it, but I don't really mind bending over. That's what DD is for anyway.  She gets so excited about helping with laundry.  DNA tests are pending.
We've had it for almost 10 years and we've never really had an issue with mold.  I just wipe the rubber gasket down every now and again.

I have no idea what brand our dryer is.  It was there when we moved in, so we gave our old one to my brother, since theirs had just stopped working.  We always seem to have dryers floating around our family. I'm sure the next time we need one, someone will be just getting rid of their old working one.
  • Yeah, I got nuttin. We have old school Kenmore top loader with dryer. But dammit, it's at least 13 years old and still works pretty well and it's still fixable.

  • Maytag front loaders. I don't mind front loaders- smell is not really an issue for me because the air is so dry here if I leave the door open after a cycle it will dry out quickly. I also have a clean washer cycle that I use the Affresh tabs with and it works good. I do not have the pedestals- I don't mind bending over but it can be a pain if you are trying to see if every sock or some small item has made it. I would not buy a Maytag though. It's noisy, we have had the latch break, it leak, and the panel with the buttons is wearing out. The set is 5 years old.
  • I have the LG front loaders with pedestals and I love them. We have never had a problem with either of them.
  • We have the LG front loader too and yeah, it's awesome. We leave the door open after washing and mold hasn't been an issue. We didn't buy the pedestals because we're cheap and DH claimed he'd build a stand for them (he has not and it's been a year). It's not really a big deal, except I think now that I'm pregnant, bending down like that will get more difficult. Ideally, we'd stack them, but there's not enough ceiling height in our basement.

my dryer is literally older than I am, so no advice there.

I know that front loaders are the devil if you use cloth diapers, but that's all the useful info  I have.

  • I've read a lot of good things about the LG front loaders, so I'm leaning that way.  Thanks for the thoughts, everyone, keep 'em coming.
  • We have LG front loaders, no pedestals. We've had them for almost 3 years and love them. We leave the washer door open when not I use and run a tub clean cycle with bleach every 4-6 weeks. I love the steam functions on both (good for deep cleaning and de-wrinkling without owning an iron).
  • our washer is a top loader kenmore that we inherited with our PA house. the only time we have issues is when it is loaded unevenly and the drum gets thrown off.  The dryer we have is older than dirt (also inherited from the PA house), but still operational, somehow. (It's been repaired and deep cleaned 2x since we moved down here - the repair guy was in shock at how much lint he pulled out the first time. We're hoping it will crap out since it is covered under our home warranty and they will replace it for free, but so far they've been able to repair it)
  • We have LG top loaders. Love love love them. No clothes have been damaged yet, and it gets clothes clean. Even gets all the dog hair out of the clothes!
  • We have Whirlpool front loaders, no pedestals because we have them stacked. We love them, we don't have any issues with mold or anything, but we also run the cloth diapers every other day and they get washed in hot water. We got the higher end version with steam refresh in the dryer and we ADORE that. My scrubs sometimes look like I slept in them, even when they've been hanging up since exiting the dryer. Steam refresh fixes them right up.
  • Okay, you all persuaded me.  The LG pair is on its way!
