Wedding Woes

Please tell me this has happened to someone else before...

Basically, my dress was one size too big and the sides of the corset was touching.  So it needed brought in a little to make it fit.  It needed slightly hemmed and a little fix around my boobs to make the top fit better.  When I got to the seamstress house to have my fitting she said "your's was the dress that needed the sides brought in a lot to make the corset work."  That was my first red flag.  Then the dress wouldn't pull up over my hips.  So I put it on as best I could over my head but it wouldn't slide down all the way.  I came out and told her it was too tight and she told me it was supposed to be tight then asked if it was possible I gained weight.  I definitely did not gain weight, I fluctuate within 5 lbs and am at the lower end of the scale currently.  I was also on my period at the original fitting so I was likely bigger then than I am now...

So, she took too much in and now my dress is too small!!!  She is going to let it back out about half-way but I'm not very confident.  My wedding is one week away.  I am panicking a little... I just need to know this has happened to someone else before!!

  • Three days before my wedding my dress was still not finished and was too big . . . my seamstress got it all finished the next day.  These seamstresses are professionals, and I'm sure that with a week away for your wedding, that is more than enough time to get it fitting properly.
It is annoying that she tried to blame you with saying that you might have gained weight.

  • This actually did happen to me. Almost exactly. I ended up having to take it to a different seamstress. She did her best with what she had to work with. In the end, it was acceptable, and wearable. But... if I had it to do over again, I would have done a last minute search for an off the rack dress. I was not comfortable at all in my dress, and when I look back at the pictures (even 8 years later) I cringe. :[ I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, and maybe this lady will be able to correct it better than my lady did, but I would start looking for a backup plan if I were you.
  • She showed me the seam from the inside and there is a lot of material there so i'm holding out hope.  I'm just so frustrated because the dress wasn't that ill-fitting to begin with!

  • how soon before the wedding is she supposed to be done? in other words, do you have time to get someone to fix it if she does a bad job?

  • I had the same thing happen to me. I could not breath. The seamstress told me it made my waist look smaller. I called the owner who talked to her and the dress was perfect when I picked it up.
  • She said it will be done by Monday but I work all day Sunday and Monday so I am scheduled to see her Tuesday at 1.  I leave town Thursday to head home for the wedding.  So not much time.  I am hoping she'll get it right.

  • Update:  She called yesterday because the dress was done.  I went to try it on and it fit perfect!  Phew..  Thanks for your responses!

  • Glad it worked out! My cousin's seamstress decided to to take an extra 2 weeks of vacation without telling anyone, and those 2 weeks happened to be during her wedding. Her dress wasn't finished 2 days before her wedding day! It ended up being sorted out in the end, but I definitely understand the stress involved here. Best of luck on your wedding day, have a blast! :)
