Traveling with my wedding dress...

My wedding is on the 24th of this month, and I am struggling with the planning.... The very last thing I have left to do is figure out how I am getting my dress all the way from Michigan to Vegas... I've heard about shipping the dress, but i would really feel more comfortable carrying it on the plane with me... Any brides wanna share how they got the dress from point a to point b? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I'm freaking out!!

    I flew with my dress as my personal item. I called a head and let them know I had a wedding dress for the flight. My arm felt like it was going to fall off by the time we got to the gate, people on the plane were super helpful, guests and employees. I also didn't feel comfortable shipping my dress either.

    we are flying southwest, i was going to ship mine from washington to vegas but it is way to spendy! i'm bringing it on! since we are boarding almost first ( family boarding) i think that we might have a better chance with a good spot for it

    I am flying southwest, also. I will bring my dress as a carry on. I have a travel hand steamer, incase there are slight wrinkles from the travel but my style of dress will travel pretty well. It's not puffy and has fabric scrunched up and down to give texture to the fitted style. I think of I had a big poofy dress it may make it more difficult

    I brought mine on the plane with me and when the flight attendants saw, they hung it in their closet for me

    I took mine as a carry on.  (Our flight was paid for my my IL with their points so that is why we went from PHL to LAX to LAS)  On the first leg of the trip, I had no issues and had the dress on my lap for the entire flight.  On the short trip from LA to LV, the flight attendant made me put it in the overhead across the bags.

    The style of my dress didn't really wrinkle so it was fine once arriving.  I did hang in the bathroom for the 2 days before our wedding.

    im working this out now... was just looking at Fit for a Bride to have it steamed... im going to pack mine in my suitcase for our flight from Sydney! We are travelling with a 2 year old, so I wont have the hands to carry it!

    I think I'm going to buy one of these special boxes designed for a wedding dress to be a carry on and then take it to FFAB. I really don't trust fedex or ups enough.

    We flew from Chicago to Vegas. I called ahead to ask about space, and the CSR told me the FAs would try to put it in the closet if possible. I had a ballgown, though, and the closet was pretty full, so the FA found an overhead bin that wasn't too full and carefully placed my gown in the part of the bin facing the front of the plane. That way, when the suitcases shifted on takeoff, they wouldn't roll back and crush my dress. Before we landed, they moved my dress to the back of the bin so that when we landed, the suitcases would move forward without crushing my dress. It was pretty smart. :) I had it steamed by Debi at Fit for a Bride when we got to Vegas. I paid a little bit extra for the pick-up/drop-off service she offers. The hotel concierge held it for her (behind the desk), and then when she brought it back, they called me to let me know they were keeping it behind the desk (hung on one of the suitcase trolleys to keep it nice and neat).

    Sorry about the lack of paragraphs. Stupid mobile site. I also recommend flying at a time when there won't be as many people on the flight, to have a better chance of closet and/or overhead space. Very early in the morning on a weekday is best.

    My wife booked an extra seat on Southwest for her dress via the procedure outlined at http://www.vegasgroom.com/(Tip)-Southwest-Airlines-Dress-Transportation_116.html

    The one way extra seat was less expensive than the insurance and shipping would have been sending it to Fit For a Bride via FedEx or UPS.  Her dress was fairly big bundled up so it would have required an entire overhead and she didn't want to risk that not working out since people seem to carry their entire home in carry on bags these days.

    I have decided that I am going to pack it in my luggage in order to carry it on.. Im flying on one of the budget airlines that does not have a closet for safe keeping... I will see about getting the dress steamed when I arrive. Will let everyone know how it goes!

    I am flying SW in a few weeks and plan on carrying mine on also. I emailed SW to ask of my dress would be considered the one extra personal carryon besides the carryon bag but they just quoted what was on their website and didn't clarify. For those that have flown SW did you also take a carryon bag? I need a carryon and I was hoping I could just out my purse in the carryon until I boarded the plane and then lay my dress down (luckily it's not a big, poofy dress)!

    Most likely you will be fine, but they told me that my dress was considered a carry on, not my personal item. Between if and I we are taking my dress as a carry on, then packing our essentials in a carry one with some other items in a tote and laptop bag as our personal items. I think it really depends on if you are on a busy flight and when boarding group you are in

    The dress wouldn't qualify as the personal item on southwest. Technically the personal item needs to fit in front of the seat in front of you like a purse, laptop bag etc. it would qualify as a carry on bag (for overhead storage) however that would be in lieu of an actual carry on suitcase.

    This is a great idea. I do the same thing with my cello since I absolutely refuse to check it.

    When I call the airlines and explain the second seat is for an instrument, they often give me the lowest price for that seat and charge me the current price for the seat I'm actually occupying. I bet they'd do the same thing for a wedding dress.

    Thank you all for clarifying since SW didn't make it clear to me! I guess I'll combine my carryon and my sons and then one of us will use the dress as their carryon. As long as it gets their safe then I'll be happy-I can't imagine packing it in my suitcase, I'd be so worried my luggage would be lost of it would be damaged somehow!

    We all had a carry on plus a personal item PLUS two dress garmet bags both extremely poofy and they let us on with no questions asked

    We carries my dress in the regular garment bag, on the way down. The ladies were all so helpful the saves a whole over head compartment for me and two of them gently laid my dress up in it and closed it. The lady then waited and made sure no one put anything in there with it. The crew was amazing. Then at the end of the flight they announced our big day everyone hooted and hollered for is and then they brought us a bottle of complimentary champagne. Awesome! On the way bag I have rolled it up and stuffed intolerance checked luggage.
