These are the best of what is posted online.  The house was built in '78 and it has not been updated...much.  But we can move in and make changes as needed.  The house is on a lot that's over an acre and there's a TON of mature trees and it's set pretty far back from the road.

Back of the house.  We're going to rip out every single bush around the house that is overgrown and basically hiding the house.

Front of the house (see what I mean about the bushes?):

Kitchen.  The breakfast bar and counters have to go.  The cabinets are actually in good shape and just need a fresh coat of paint and new hardware. We'll probably put in stainless steel appliances and a new sink.

Family room:

Master bed/bathroom.  There is a shower and toilet to the left of the sink.  The door to the far left of the room is actually a completely empty closet.  We will probably update the bathroom eventually and may go into that closet to expand the bathroom.  There's another closet in the room and we have options for expanding it if needed.  Oh and the guy in the mirror will have to go.  ;)

Re: *heffa* (and anyone else)

  • That is a gorgeous tree in front.  What is that, some kind of an oak?  I'd buy that house just for the tree.  :)

Interesting choice on the balusters supporting the bar/counter.  Have not seen that done before.
  • That is seriously why I thought I was going to hate the house.  I was all, "Fuck no.  That is a terrible kitchen...SEE WHAT THEY DID?!"  But being up close and especially since th cabinets are in decent shape, I can see how we can update it for not too much $$.

We'll probably update the kitchen next spring...I think that will give us enough time to live in it and figure out what will work and what won't.  We'll also replace the flooring on the main floor at that time too.  We'll put down all wood throughout the main level.
  • is the toilet in a closet?
it's interesting that the master bedroom opens into the master bathroom (that there's no door) -it's a little like a hotel.

I wouldn't necessarily cut all of the bushes back. it's extra insulation, as long as the roots aren't screwing with your foundation.

when you change out the counters, will you extend cabinets out under where the breakfast bar is, or just remove that section completely? Our kitchen is set up a bit differently, but i like our bar for the added counter space - that's usually my prep area, or is a buffet space when we have a party/guests. we have a breakfast nook with a table right next to the bar, so no barstools on the other side.
  • I think we'll shorten the breakfast bar and add cabinets or at least shelves under it.

The door next to the sink houses the shower/toilet.  Then to the far left (when looking at the pic), the door next to the door to the hallway is for a closet.  It's just an empty space.  No shelves or anything.  So, we'll see if we can live w/o having that space and if we can, we may go into that closet to expand the bathroom (add a tub and just make it bigger, because the shower/toilet room is no bigger than a small closet).
  • As far as the bushes, we may not take ALL of them out...but a good majority.  We'll plant other stuff and may do different bushes, but we just don't love the ones that are there right now for the most part.

That tree looks like a pin oak to me.  Woo.  I love my oak trees, except for all the raking in the spring and fall.
  • I love that kitchen. I think dark brown countertops would look awesome and you would have so much more room without the breakfast bar.
