Is it normal for a venue to not return phone calls?

Hi all, I'm new here, just beginning to plan my wedding and am running into communication issues with venues, namely very short emails with a lack of information and phone calls not being returned. Is the venue blowing me off or is this standard practice? Should I call them again instead of waiting for them to return my calls? Ideally I would like to talk to someone in person but the venue is a few hundred miles away.

  • If they're being unresponsive, I'd look for other venues.  It's very unprofessional and unbusinesslike to not return calls or answer emails curtly with no information.
  • Are we talking about one or two days, or it's been a week? If it's been a long time, I would worry about the professionalism and look somewhere else. One thing we like about our venue is that they are quite responsive. Makes it much easier to deal with.

Lynda has a point about weekends, though. Venues often have events Thu-Sun, and then the coordinators generally have Mon off. So the middle of the week is the best time to get a hold of somebody.

  • I have to agree with Lynda.  This is currently peak wedding season for many vendors so they are probably swamped with weddings that are on their books for this summer.

But I also wonder what the length of time has been between when you contacted them and now?  Even though it is peak wedding season, if the vendors haven't gotten back to you within a week then I would be concerned.  Even though they are busy they still want to be busy in the future so them ignoring your call isn't a good sign.

I agree with what others have mentioned.  The venue is just likely busy with summer weddings.  If you continue to not receive any response from them, move on to another venue.

This is what I'm going to need to think about also; I'm going to work with a couple to plan aspects of their October wedding, including getting a venue, but October is a transition into the less busy wedding season.

Thank you all so much for the input! I was able to get a hold of someone finally (after about a week of waiting/telephone tag) and I set up an appointment to actually go up there and speak with someone in person. They are fortunate I am so interested in their venue, as they are the only one out of the dozens I have contacted that have not been good about returning calls and sending out pricing/venue information. I took your advice Lynda on the comprehensive list of questions, I have a list of points I will bring with me to our meeting rather than asking a question or two here and there on the phone.
