I LOVE Air Conditioning and Fans!!!

You really don't remember how blessed you are to have AC until it goes out! Thank you Wal-Mart for having inexpensive fans, living in an apartment so we're not financially responsible for fixing it, and no dead fishies - yet. The water temp rose over 10 degrees in less than 24 hours and is almost back to normal after FI dumped about half a bag of ice in the tank (ugh!) and I came home after work with the fans, 7 hours ago. A few of the fish are acting a little out of character so we'll see what happens in the next few days. 2 summers in a row our AC has gone out. At least this time they could fix it in a day. It took so long last year to "fix" that they had to install a window unit for a few weeks. Being back down to 75/80 degrees is soooo much more comfortable than the 85/90 degrees it was 23 hours ago.

  • Yikes! Thankfully, up until the last few months, I never lived anywhere warm enough to even need a fan. I'm so grateful for mine as well!

  • That SUCKS. My parents' air conditioner/heater unit thing went out the summer I moved out for college. Here in my part of Alabama, it gets HOT, especially when it's trying to storm or something. Despite that, they NEVER got it fixed. When we moved in May into the new house, it had TWO functional A/C units - one for each level - and for about a month and a half, Mom said we weren't turning them on ever.

She turned them "on" towards the of June, because even she was hot. Now, rather than getting close to 90+ INSIDE, it hovers at 80. Which is where she said to put them. -.-

When FI moves in in the next couple of weeks, I will be bumping the upstairs one down to, like, 72-74. It will be so luxuriously cool. I am so excited.

  • Amen! I live in Texas and if we didn't have AC 10 months out of the year, I'd die.

  • AC is my best friend. Fuck the heat.

  • I don't mind summer, but living without A/C is so wrong.  I'm in a second (top) floor apartment with a flat roof and coming home at the end of the day is miserable, so our A/C runs until the next morning.  FI and I are house hunting right now, and our absolute MUST is central air.

  • It's actually been hot during the day here the mountains.  For some reason this place really retains heat.  So while it will be 64 outside it's still pretty hot inside.   I have a tough time sleeping when it's hot.

We bought an a/c for the living room area.  Our bedroom has a casement windows which makes it difficult to put in an a/c.  Not impossible, but since it's not our place and it's only hot for a 6-8 weeks it's not worth the expensive.   So DH ended up on the sofa last night. I stayed upstairs with a fan.  By the middle of the night it finally cooled off in the bedroom.

My office is on the first floor and it's always nice and cool down here.  It never gets direct sunlight like the upper 2 floors.   I've considered blowing up the air mattress down here to sleep, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Ours central a/c crapped out and it was 2 weeks before we got it replaced. We topped out at 87 degrees on the 2nd floor. I know the feeling!
  • I could not sleep without ac and fan.  Doesn't bother me so much during the day, I can deal...but night is a totally different story.  It has to be almost cold for me to sleep well.  Then I pile on the blankets, so I can kick them off in the middle of the night.  I'm werid like that.

  • I hate the noise from the tower AC things we have (especially the one that we have in the kitchen, it sounds like a jet coming in for a landing), but the cool is worth it.

  • When I lived in DC and the AC went out, I went straight cray cray.  Granted, I grew up a Midwest girl, so I'm more capable of dealing with the cold, but between the heat and the humidity....that motherfuckin' city's a swamp town and I could not DEAL.  I think my BM/former roommate actually has a picture of me, in my underwear and bra, sweating profusely with one hand on the phone, yelling at our landlord, and the other hand with an ice-pack on my head.

I live in San Diego where the weather is "Sunny and 75" year round. Which is bullshit. Our temps range, but because of the myth most of the older houses are not outfitted with AC. And we have little or no insulation in our walls. I feel your pain.
  • Even when the AC is working properly (I don't think it's as strong as it was a few days ago but only time will tell) in the middle of summer I usually bust out the ice packs in order to cool off. I hate sleeping with fans. If the air blows on me I get sick, my guess is the air dries out my throat because it's happened many places with many different fans (ceiling, standing, even the AC if I'm too cold), but when it's that hot...I'll risk getting sick in order to sleep comfortably.

@beachyone15, I'm in TX too. UGH!
