Who Do You Think You Are?

Anyone else watch WDYTYA?  This is one of the rare shows that seems to suck me in from time to time.  I'm somewhat obsessed.  Season premiere tonight - anyone else watching?

  • Who is on tonight's? What network? I catch them here and there as reruns and find it very interesting. Saw Christina Applegate episode a few days ago and it was pretty depressing.

  • Had to check the programming schedule - the rerun of Chelsea Handler is on now. Sarah Jessica Parker is on next, and the season premiere for tonight is Cynthia Nixon. Matthew Broderick's rerun is on after that. Sooo, several on tonight. I'm passing on the reruns, though.

  • That's kind of weird that those 3 are tied to Sex & the City lol. I'll probably watch

  • I have the DVR set to record the series.  I usually find them very interesting...

I have a moderate interest in genealogy since I have an ancestor who came to America on the Mayflower and I only found out a few years ago.  I think I'm a distant cousin to Richard Gere.  :)

  • I haven't watched it, but I'd love to do a genealogy thing or one of those DNA tests that are supposed to show your ancestry.

  • I think I'd love that show but I've never seen it. Is it on Netflix or Hulu? What network is it on?

It's a great show...Even if they likely sensationalize it at least a bit for ratings.  It's really neat to see all these people back track their ancestry

I am curious though, the rate of increase for visits for ancestry.com's website over the past few hours
  • Well, that episode was unexpected....

  • I have similar story in my genealogy, but gggg-Uncle Isaac axed his wife.  I don't know why.  My ancestor was the brother who took care of legal matters and the estate.  Isaac died of a cholera epidemic in Ohio State Prison in the 1850s.  His kids were adopted out.  The entire extended family sold there farms in Ohio and moved west to Iowa, where they never spoke of it again.  Nobody knew until I found the court records about 30 years ago.

Every family has a few skeletons in the closet.  I like the non-judgmental attitude of the show.  Genealogy is a life consuming hobby.  Once you get bit by the bug, your life changes.  It has helped me to understand the dysfunction in my family.

Grandma was pregnant at 17.  Her own father had long abandoned the family, and her mother was a bitter, Bible thumping conservative who was demanding an abortion, rather then bear the shame of having a daughter with an illegitimate child.  Easy to judge great-grandma, until you find out that she was orphaned at the age of three when both her parents died in an influenza epidemic, and she was raised by two maiden aunt sisters of her father.  She didn't even know her own mother's name!  She fell in love with the wrong man and eloped against family wishes.  They never spoke again.  It must have been awful when she realized that her relatives had been right about her choice.
What goes around, comes around.  Great grandma died alone in her late 90s in a nursing home, unloved.  I was 16.  She never even knew of my existence.  She never spoke to her daughter, my grandmother, again.  I would like to find out more about her, but her surname is "Smith", which makes it difficult to trace.

  • I love the show! I haven't seen any lately but have a dvr full of episodes.

I love genealogy. We know very little on my dad's side but my mom's side is fascinating. We descend from one of the few Jewish barons in Germany. On my mom's other side, there's a strong link to Lenin. Plus, I'm still in awe of my great-gramma: she was friends with Golda Meir and was a big fundraiser for the Zionist movement. We also have something weird in common- we've both worked reading palms. I didn't know about her talent until years after I stopped doing it.

  • My grandmother swears she is related to Percy Bysshe Shelley on her dad's side.  They were from England and Ireland and the location/timing works out, but as far as I know there is no actual proof.  I still love this story because it means I have some connection to Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft.

One of my ancestors fought for OH in the Civil War and was a POW at Andersenville.

I really want to research some more into genealogy but I don't really know where to start, and we have a lot of extremely common names in my family.  We've been in America for so long that immigration records aren't much help.
