I'm leaving in a few minutes to do acupuncture for the first time.

I have debilitating migraines. I see a neurologist on a regular basis and have for years and years. Nothing helps. I'm probably going to do the botox thing. But now we are trying acupuncture because my insurance covers it. I'm kinda scared because needles in my skin, lots of them, ouch. Anyone else do acupuncture?

I've considered it for a myriad of reasons (migraines being one of them) but never tried it. I'll be interested to hear how it works for you- hopefully it does! The needles supposedly aren't that big of deal, but good luck! Happy healing.

I've done it for migraines in the past. It ended up helping my GERD more, but the doctor also misdiagnosed my migraines (it was tied to a neck injury- not a true migraine). It really didn't hurt at all and the needles look scarier than they are

I've done it for the 5 herniated discs in my neck and nerve damage. (All from a car accident) The needles didn't really hurt. I had several treatments and felt like it wasn't doing anything so I stopped going. I felt like it was just a waste of time and money.

I've done it before, and the needles aren't scary at all. You'll feel maybe a slight pinch (if you feel anything at all), and once they're in, you don't really notice them.

I used to work at an acupuncture office. You have nothing to worry about

We had a few patients come in who were very apprehensive but most came out of their treatment surprised and happy. Many patients fall asleep.

We saw a lot of patients for migraines. You probably won't notice a difference after the first treatment (but everybody is different - some patients noticed a significant difference in their pain after one treatment, others it took 5 or 6 or even more visits).

I've had it done once or twice as a teenager and although it didn't drastically help my problem, it was totally painless. Some people react very strongly to it and it helps them greatly; others, not so much.

My grandfather is 86 and swears by it! He says it really helps his arthritis and other old-age pains. He talked his friend into it, who was basically dying of cancer. Not as a cure, but just to help him cope a little with the pain and that man loved it too. I would definitely give it a shot if I had the need.

Totally fixed my hip, or at least made physic work a lot better. Also relaxed my calf when I tore it up pretty bad. I can't stand needles, and you don't feel these going in, cos they're so small. It still creeps me out though, and I was glad when my physic said I didn't need another treatment. I'll do it to help heal my injuries faster, but I'm not ready to do it for everything.

I've done it for excruciating breast pain from polycystic breast disease.

It didn't help me with the pain but the needles didn't hurt.

Okay I'm back. I call total bull sh!t on those of you who said the needles didn't hurt. I mean they don't HURT exactly but they did pinch. I was really apprehensive about the ones going into the bottoms of my feet. I had to do the little kid 1,2,3 Cough thing. It wasn't so bad. There was one on the top of my foot right on top of a bone so every time I as much as moved it hurt. But what really hurt was when she manipulated them. It feels like a small electric shock. Didn't like that. But overall the pain was minimal so I'm certainly going back.

I have been considering going to a chiropractor. Fiance bought me a massage a couple months ago as a surprise. I went in and the lady told me I have a huge knot in my left shoulder and lots of knots in my back. Because it was a Swedish massage she did not fix any of them. I would like to go and be adjusted or go for a deep tissue massage so that those can really be fixed. It was interested because she said my left shoulder tends to sit higher, and when you have knots all of your other muscles are pulling and tugging causing the pain.

I used to go to a chiropractor and it was fantastic. It really helped my headaches/migraines and often I needed an adjustment because something was off (usually in my neck/upper back). I was always able to function and sleep better.

Every acupuncturist has their own treatment style. I had one acupuncturist who I loved and my migraines went from getting them everyday (literally!!) to virtually none at all. She moved so I had to find another one who also moved the needles when they were in and it hurt like a mother.. Plus I was swollen the next day! Needless to say, I found someone who was less, uh, aggressive with the needling and so far, so good.

I know a woman who was 40 & smoked since her teenage years. She has tried almost every method in the book to quit, only to start back up time and time again. She got acupuncture and hasn't smoked in the 10+ years since.
