Colored Dress That Doesn't Scream Prom

I never pictured myself in white on my wedding day. I really want a platinum gown, but my family is saying I'll look like I'm going to prom, not my wedding. What do you all think? Can a gown that isn't white or off-white really look wedding "appropriate"?

wear whatever you want! Your outfit isn't your family's concern. If you feel like a bride, that's all that matters. It'll be pretty obvious that you're a bride and not going to prom since you're the one standing up at the altar and saying vows...

Snark over. If you want it to be more "bride-y", you might consider wearing a veil - that's a knock-you-over-the-head bride accessory.

Totally! Sequin dresses are all over the wedding blogs right now. As long as it doesn't have huge fake jewels or a ton of cleavage I think you can totally get away with it. Have you looked at www.renttherunway.com? I'm obsessed with it and rent dresses from them every chance I get. I'm putting my bridesmaids in floor length gold sequin gowns we are renting and I am totally jealous and wish they were all wearing white and I was in the sequins! Plus, RTR dresses are all so, so pretty. You can find a ton of classy ones, and I've seen a few reviews posted on there with pictures of brides that used the dresses as their wedding dress. (Plus, you would save a ton of money.)

Totally. I think the key is finding the right details (for example, rhinestones gallore combined with tullescreams prom to me) and the right cut. What kind of style or silhouette do you think you'd want?

I say rock what you want. A few old guests might think it's your second wedding, but whatever. They'll be the old people not used to seeing brides not in white/ivory.

Wear whatever you want. If you're worried about looking too prom-y, try shopping for evening gowns at upscale places like Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom.

Check out the formal evening gowns on newyorkdress.com. I just found that site today and I'm obsessed! They have tons of dresses, and a lot of them are more sophisticated and more stylish than a prom dress, in any color you could think of. I don't mean to sound like an advertisement for this site, but I wish I would have found it sooner! I agree with the other girls; as long as there aren't huge fake jewels on it, you'll be fine. It's your dress, you're the one who should love it. Do what you want!

My advice would be to find a dress you love in the colour you want, then put on a veil, earrings, bracelet, etc. so your family can see that you can look very bridal without having to wear white. But if that still doesn't work, just tell them that you appreciate their opinion but your decision is final because you love the dress that you will be wearing on your wedding day. Bridesmaids dresses are an excellent, affordable option. I wore the Wtoo 226 in hot pink and it didn't look like prom at all.

OMG I think they are wrong, a platinum gown will look gorgeous and there are so many to choose from. I tried on a Maggie Sottero the other day in platinum and adored it.

Oh just read the pregnant part, you'll still be able to find something gorgeous and YES it can be any color you'd like. Can't wait to see what you pick out.

Here's a picture of my friend in her wedding dress. Doesn't look like prom at all. She looks glamorous IMO.
