I want my bridesmaid dresses to all be the same except the top. I want to give them an option to have have strapless, one strap, two straps, etc.... Does anyone know any designers that do this?

I used Ann Taylor. I told them silk georgette, navy and knee length and let them choose whatever. I didn't say "one of you has to do strapless, one of you has to do one-shoulder, etc. They were really happy because they had a dress they liked and could wear again.

Before you can pick a designer, though, you  need to know their budget. If you can give me a budget, I can find you a designer that will fit the bill.

  • So...wait, you're going to assign necklines? That just seems so odd and setting you up for trouble. For example, I would not be pleased if you assigned strapless to me but someone else got to wear a far more functional high neckline. I feel that's just way too much work for you and potential annoyance for them.

I picked a designer (Alfred Sung) that was in everyone's budget, and then let them pick whatever dress they wanted within the color and length I had also chosen. They all naturally chose different dresses with different necklines.

  • 1st, get their dress budgets in private, then find a designer that has lots of options at and below the lowest budget you are given.

2nd, let your BM's choose their own necklines.  I'd be relaly pissed if you tried to assign me to wear a strapless or one shoulder dress.

  • I am not assigning necklines. I am just looking for a designer that offers different necklines for the same dress.
  • Gotcha. Then yeah, pretty much any major bridesmaid dress line can get that done for you. If you know your bridesmaids' budgets and tell us, we can probably help you find a designer.

The Dessy Group, Alfred Angelo, and David's Bridal are probably good places to start though.

  • Their budget is pretty generous but I wouldn't want them to pay anymore than $250. I would be more comfortable keeping it closer to $200 or less. So I'm looking $250 or less.
  • Try out the Dessy Group (they have a number of designers under that banner - Alfred Sung and After Six were the ones I ran into the most). My girls paid between $140 and $180ish I think. I think Ann Taylor has a number under $200 as well.

They told you that they are willing to spend upwards of $250 on their dresses?

  • Not to be rude prettygirllost but if your commenting on a question I posted, I would appreciate giving me some advice instead of leaving judgmental comments and questions. I'm looking for help for bides-to- be that want to help instead of questioning me and my friends money situation. Thank you.
  • Thank you so much PDKH! I will check them out! :)

I don't think she's trying to be judgmental. However, $250 is a high budget for bridesmaid dresses for a lot of people, so I think she was trying to confirm that those numbers are in fact the lowest number you got from your bridesmaids.

We often have brides who roll through here claiming that their bridesmaids will drop huge dollar amounts on bridesmaid dresses, when really that's just the expense they want them to spend, and they haven't bothered to check with their friends at all.

  • Nope, quite the opposite. I don't feel comfortable asking for them to spend that much money. Hence why I posted I would rather stick to under $200.

How about you quit with your assumptions and learn not to read into things?

I was asking a question for clarification before giving you the names of some designers.  I also wanted to make sure their budget came from them, and not you.

    Exactly this.

  • If you want to stick around $200, sign up for Ann Taylor emails and wait for the 40% entire website email (it comes several times a year). The knee length dresses are about $160 with the 40% off.

My BMs loved their dresses - very high quality and none of them needed to get them altered at all. The only thing is that you are a bit limited if you're looking for a certain shade or color.

  • What a wonderful idea!! Thanks so much southernbelle! My color is Navy, which I feel is pretty common. I'll check that out! Thank you again!
  • @knloube do I get an apology for your overreaction to my question?
