Hotel Recs?

Seventh Anniversary 100 Comments 5 Love Its Name Dropper
I'm from Southern California. I'm flying into DCA in November with my son so he can tour the Naval Academy in Annapolis. We'll also have a couple days to look around/do touristy stuff. I'm trying to book our hotel on Hotwire, but I'm really not sure what areas would be good. We'll have a rental car, so free parking is a plus. From a traffic perspective, is it easier to stay in DC and travel out to Annapolis, or stay in Annapolis and drive into DC? Are there any areas in or around DC that you wouldn't recommend due to safety or insane traffic? Any other advice? I've flown into DCA once, but it was for a conference held in Falls Church, so I didn't get a great feel for the area. I would like to stay in a hotel that's at least Holiday Inn Express/Hampton Inn quality. Thanks!

Re: Hotel Recs?

  • It depends on your budget and your preferences.    If parking your car is an issue and believe me in DC parking is very tricky and you are going to be touring DC then I'd say it is better to stay in DC where you may get parking as part of your hotel stay.  That way you can take walk and/or take metro to see the city and have somewhere to park after you visit Annapolis. The only issue with staying in DC is that finding hotel prices comparable to staying at a Holiday inn Express/Hampton Inn will be hard to find. Otherwise stay in Annapolis and drive to a metro (say New Carrollton) and metro into DC for sight seeing.  If you stay in Annapolis you may find you never make it to DC.  Annapolis is really nice and there are plenty to see and do right there not to mention the restaurants.  Yum-Yum.

  • DC hotels can be exorbitantly priced, especially in summer months, but visiting friends and family have had good luck with vacation rental sites such as Airbnb and VRBO. That said, I agree that Annapolis is incredibly nice and you'd have plenty to do and see out there alone.
