My Big Fat Indian Wedding Venue Search!

Hello!

I'm in desperate need of some help finding a large venue in New Jersey (or even southeast PA!). We've been looking for venues for our traditional South Asian wedding for a while and just can't seem to find anything that's not a "wedding factory" but can also accommodate 500 guests. Below are some details, I'm open hearing about any and all venues, traditional to unconventional, that have a large capacity!

  • Guest Count: 400-500
  • Dates: Hoping for Saturday in June 2015, but a Sunday is more realistic at this point
  • Ceremony: Preferably outdoors, in a garden/grassy field with space for our guest to walk around and mingle during the ceremony (Indian weddings are 3 hours long so we want to give the guest something else to do during that time as well, like snacks, maybe a few games?)
  • Cocktail hour: In or outdoors
  • Reception: Preferably indoors, with a large dance floor
  • Aesthetic: We really like the rustic theme, would love to get married on a farm with a barn reception, or at an estate to make the 500 person wedding feel more intimate (I know, its going to be tough..)
  • Catering: We want to use outside catering to get authentic Indian food
  • Budget: With as many people as we're going to have, we've been getting some flexibility on the per head costs at the venues we've seen. Keeping this open for now, and hoping we find something we love and can negotiate!
Sorry for the long post, just want to provide as much information as I can. We appreciate the help, thank you fellow knot-ers!!

Re: My Big Fat Indian Wedding Venue Search!

  • Try posting this on your local board ( go to the drop down menu on the right, local boards, find the NJ one) - this one is international and not as helpful.

But just in general, the largest venues we found were art galleries, museums, or outdoor event spaces on private properties.

Also, just a note for navigating the boards in the future, this one is for Wedding Party as in bridesmaids and groomsmen :)

  • ahh Thank you for your help! I'll definitely re-post!
  • I am from NJ and attended a 400-something person Indian wedding at The Palace in Somerset.  It was beautiful.  But it's absolutely a wedding factory and has a manufactured sort of feel.

  • From South Jersey here and I can't think of many spaces that describe what you are looking for.  Also, are you sure about the outside ceremony in June?  3 hours could be very long for you and FI in your formal clothes in hot and humid weather, which we had this year in mid June.

I know you don't want a wedding factory, but I would look into a hotel.  My friends were just married at the Sheraton in Society Hill, Philly.  There was room for outdoor and indoor spaces.  Not sure if they could hold the 400-500 people though.  Many venues will work with you if you want certain authentic ethnic foods.  Our reception was at Brigalias in Sicklerville (not big enough for your list, that I know of), but my mom's co-worker also had her wedding there later.  It was an Indian wedding and they were allowed to bring in outside food.
