I got makeup and...Im bummed

So today I went to the mall with my FI's aunt. I talked to the lady at a makeup counter (not mentioning a brand) about getting married and wanting to try out various makeups to see what I liked. First of all, she informed me that my face was very dry even though Ive been doing what my dermatologist told me to do. So she put some various creams on to begin with. She did my makeup today with a light and yet lasting foundation (as a req) along with some eyeshadow etc. I ended up buying about $250 worth of product from her. I got home a few hours later and my FI was like...eh I don't really like it...I think it looks better when you do it yourself. So now Im bummed...

Something similar happened to me, except I didn't buy a whole lot of makeup.  My FI didn't like the makeover that I got at MAC (I didn't either).  First of all, if you have products you don't want for whatever reason, return them.  Most malls have pretty generous return policies.  <div>
</div><div>Second, if you really want to DIY, practice.  I recommend watching youtube videos and asking people at Sephora for help.  </div>
  • I really thought that it looked super good and natural on me. I was wondering, we went to an area that a while away from my home...wonder if I can take it back to that makeup counter at a different mall. Walmart, Lowes, etc doesn't care if it was from a different location. I really do feel that I want to keep the moisturizers and the blush but other items maybe not...

My makeup will be done by a professional my mom knows that retired from  a similar makeup counter. She had just asked me if I liked a particular brand better than another so I was hoping to try out the other brands. I looked at the MAC counter and it looked a little too dramatic for me

I would call and ask about the return policy.
  • If it's not open I would try to return it.

Even if it's open they should take it back.  I've taken back 3 opened items to the mall.
  • Yeah its not opened and Im not planning on it. Im gong to keep some items but will DEF be returning some items. Wonder if I can take my return with the receipt to a Belk that is closer? Anybody know?
  • awwww.... You should return it! Even if it was used, they wont give you a problem as long as you have the receipt.
I used to work at a makeup counter and know how they talk to people. I think you should go to a few counters and get advice from all of them. Only buy when you think your ready and completely happy with it. And bring a camera with you so you can take a picture of the look she gave you.

    Hope that helps!

  • Well that is too bad but I have to wonder if because it was a different look, your FI just wasn't used to it.  If you were standing in your wedding dress with your hair all done too, I wonder if he would have said the same thing--my guess is probably not.  It might have just been that because this was a regular day, the makeup looked too different to him--but I guarantee on your wedding day, he'll love it.

If the Belk has the same kind of counter (say it's Lancome), then they should take it.  What I was saying is call the Belk you want to go to and ask.
  • Keri-that was my origninal plan was to go to various counters over a period of time and try out what they have to offer, but I got side tracked and all caught up in it. Plus, I have a really hard time saying no lol. Then, before I knew it the lady had all this stuff stacked up that I "needed" and the one item I was out of at home and really did need...I didn't even get

Stephie-I wondered that at first because my makeup is usually a bit dramatic. My contacts really make grays pop and she had a very natural tone to my look so I was wondering the same thing.

Goldie-I have to work close by to a Belk this coming week so I think I may stop by during lunch or right after work to see what they say.
  • I had a similar experience with my first makeup trial...the woman even went so far as to suggest my mom get Botox and poke fun at my eyebrows!  After spending a considerable amount on the trial and being pretty depressed about the outcome, I wound up finding a great gal at the local mall whose work was great!  I would suggest you return the makeup you purchassed and give it one more go with a maekup artist, explaining in detail what you didn't like about the first try.  You may wind up very pleased!

I would ask him what he didn't like about it. It may be something simple that you could tweak. :D Sorry he bumbed you out! He probably didn't mean to!

  • Yeah Trav DEF didn't mean to bum me out. I tried to not let him know that it bothered me, but I did ask him why he didn't like it...which in guy terms is just kind of a grunt about how it didn't look like me...

So I decided to just keep the products and try them out for a while. So, I have to say that after trying them out and combining them with my own style...Im pretty happy with them. Trav hasn't said anything else about it so he seems to be ok with my look. I think it was my eye makeup that threw him off. Thanks all for your input!! It made me feel so much better to hear that I wasn't the only one that had had experiences like this with makeup.
