Bar Opinions

I'm having trouble deciding what to serve at our reception in the bar. We are having around 300 people and the menu is pulled pork, smoked brisket, pasta salad, regular salad, bread, vegetables and maybe something else? Not all the way sure yet.

We are definitely having beer & red and white wines, but I would really like to have some sort of "liquor option". For example at my sister's wedding, we had two margarita machines and one virgin strawberry daquiri machine plus beer and wine. They were a hit and delicous!

I was thinking of doing a "brides choice" and a "grooms choice". Or, if they are both fruity just doing one choice.

He likes Captain Morgan and loved this rum punch we had in Mexico. Found this recipe on Pinterest and it sounds similar.

Our "colors" are yellow and gray so I was thinking something more like this. Lynchburg lemonade, because I am a sucker for sticking to the "theme" and I love anything thats lemony.

Representing the USA - Lynchburg Lemonade: 1½ oz. Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Whiskey, ¾ oz. Cointreau, ¼ oz. lemon juice, Lemon-lime soda. Combine first three ingredients into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with lemon-lime soda, gently stir.

What would you like to drink as a signature (ish) drink?

Re: Bar Opinions

  • well I'm  beer and wine girl, sooooo.

I think your options are good.  Plus they both can be made ahead of time.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Sticking with the barbecue theme...

Really, any spiked lemonade would work well with barbecue.

  • Wow! That grilled lemonade sounds amazing! I just might have to try that one at home first. :)

I would prefer something with rum or vodka only and some sugary-ness.  I don't like wine or beer (most beer I can't have anyways) and I can't have whiskey because I have Celiac disease.
ETA I hate tomato juice drinks.

  • I would do spiked lemonades and sweet teas, sticks with the theme and is delicious.

  • My opinion is, yes I'd rather be at a bar right now.

Oh, wait.  Just kidding.  I think those drinks sound like fun.  Don't get too hung up with colors matching your wedding, though.  I doubt anyone will notice.
  • Eh I'm a sucker for matching colors too. I empathize, as long as you don't let it totally control your choices.

I also think anything tea or lemon would go really well with the BBQ. Or maybe like a watermelon margarita.

  • Oooh, this goes well with bbq and is super easy:
Ruby Red Grapefruit juice + vodka + a slice of lime.  My dad calls it his "pink drink".
  • Sweet tea and peach vodka is excellent. Sweet tea and honey vodka is also excellent.

They're also so simple that they'd be really hard to fuck up.

  • Anything lemonade with alcohol is okay in my books to be honest. I know they make a sweet tea flavored vodka, which is kind of spendy but, would be delicious in a signature drink: . http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx/Spirits/Vodka/Fire-Fly/Firefly-Sweet-Tea-Vodka/29531

  • I'll take one of each. Now, please. (Yes, it sounds good.)
  • The only thing I'd be weary of (and why we didn't have a signature drink) is that people will try them, take two sips, decide they don't like it and get something they know they like, so it's a waste. I saw a lot of this I saw at a wedding recently. That said, H & I would love your options.
  • OMG RUM PUNCH! We loved it in Antigua (and drunk off it really fast). I like spiked iced teas and lemonades. That's awesome.

  • l OP, your menu sounds absolutely delicious.  I love BBQ and wish more weddings would have them.  I don't have any new alcohol ideas, though spiked lemonade and ice tea sounds good.  Maybe to make the drinks match the colors you could find yellow and gray drink umbrellas?  TBH, a gray drink might make me feel a little odd about the contents.  But for non-drinks, I love that color combination:)  Happy wedding planning!
  • The spiked lemonade would be awesome! You could also do Dirty Arnies (iced tea and lemonade, spiked with vodka) or Dirty Shirleys (spiked Shirley Temple). Margaritas. Coke with anything.
  • I will have one of everything, please.

If I had to choose, I'd do the rum punch.

  • Thanks so much everyone. It helps to know I am heading in the right direction. Guess we will just have to have some taste tests!

And yes, we have been together over 8 years and live in Kansas City. We want to eat something we love on that day, not something super fancy and just not us. So BBQ it is!

  • Ain't nothing wrong with BBQ!!!!

    Holy cannoli, those pants!
  • Some advice (less about your menu, more about signature cocktails). I think we hired the world's dumbest bartenders because they did not understand the concept of signature drinks. We had beer, wine, soda and lemonade. And Moscow Mules (vodka, lime and ginger beer). People asked for vodka and OJ (which we did not have) and instead of saying no, they went out and bought OJ during the reception.

They also told people they didn't know how to make the drink, despite being told twice.

Bottom line- make it clear what you are serving and be sure the bartenders have the recipe. I didn't realize how dumb these people were until AFTER the wedding was over.

Wow! Ya, I would be pissed!

I was thinking of renting 5 or 10 gallon beverage dispensers and just having whatever "recipe" premade and adding soda if necessary later.

I'm in KC too. Out of curiosity, which BBQ place is catering?
