Dark Envelopes

Ok, so I picked out our invites. They are cobalt blue pocketfolds.  We were considering doing matching cobalt blue envelopes, but am unsure how I would write on them. I was going to try to use a calligraphy pen. I did that for STDs and it was okay, but on white envelopes.

How would I write on the dark envelopes, or should I give up on that dream and just order white or silver?

Also, I was thinking of getting a stamp for the return address, is that rude? And then I could stamp the return address on the invite, the return address on the RSVP, and the address on the RSVP. It seemed that would save me time on the 150 invites I have to fill out.

Thanks ladies! :)

Re: Dark Envelopes

  • I'd keep in mind that envelopes are meant to be functional - they're meant to get the invite from point A to point B. The more easily they can be read, the easier their functional task is. Not to mention, people will rip it open and throw it away almost immediately.

That said though, I do think a silver pen would work if you're in love with the blue. Also, would you consider doing a white or silver outer envelope and blue as your inner envelope.

  • If it's rude to use a nice stamp for the return address, I and a bunch of other couples I've gotten invites from recently were rude. It's fine and doesn't hurt anyone - and my mom now has a return address stamp!

I used these to write on a black surface and it worked out great. It says gel pen, put it's more calligraphy than 6th grade doodles. (CLICK) But really, any good white or silver caligraphy pen will probably look great.

  • We bought an embosser for the return address on the envelopes for our STD's the main mailing envelopes and our thank you's.  It was awesome, I definitely plan to reuse it for Xmas card too.

  • Would you consider doing printed labels in a nice font? I'm not sure how that would look actually, just a thought.

I ordered a custom return address stamp through Etsy that we used both for the main envelopes and the RSVP envelope enclosed in the invitation. I'm not aware that this against any kind of etiquette, and I got a ton of compliments on it.

  • Yea, I'm not in love with the blue, FI is. I'm a softy for FI, but since we are long distance, I will be doing all of the addressing.  So I told him I'd find out if it was possible.

I think we were nixing inner envelopes since we are doing pocket-folds.

It looks like maybe a silver caligraphy pen might work

  • Oh thanks ladies! Lot of responses while I was typing.

-We won't be doing printed labels or printing on the invite.

-I have no idea what embossing is or how to do it.

  • We used dark blue envelopes with silver ink for some of our Save the Dates.  Didn't work well with our local post office.  If the ink got wet or smeared, it was too hard to read.  Since we'd started with a test batch for family (to check delivery time and postage) we switched to labels for the remaining envelopes and had more luck.

I'd really suggest flipping your colors, use white or silver envelopes and cobalt ink.

But I like the stamp idea and don't think it's too informal.  I'm hoping for an embosser for my birthday or Christmas.

  • Look up embossing on Google, it actually looks very elegant and timeless. It will take you a few trials to get it right but it'll look so beautiful! And dark envelopes are a great idea as long as everything is legible and clear. Will you be doing it yourself? maybe you could get a calligrapher? That's what I did but then again my envelopes were ivory...

  • I got my embosser from this website it was pretty cheap too.

  • Could you maybe find some single envelopes or paper in that color and buy just one or two to experiment with before ordering enough for everyone.

I think I am going to do this.

  • We had red envelopes and used a silver marker with no smudging or smearing problems. I didn't even think to do a test to make sure there were no problems.

  • We did navy envelopes with gold calligraphy. Then we embossed the return address on the envelope flap. It looked really nice. Then we had a stamp for the RSVP envelopes that were gold. By we, I mean my mom. She wanted it to look a certain way, so she had to make it complicated...

I think this was the embosser we used: http://www.weddingpaperdivas.com/product/13923/embosser_impressive_address.html

  • Royal Blue and silver and white are our colors so I feel you about the blue envelopes OP.  I've only been looking at styles and designs for invites since I'm so far out, but I was looking at envelopes, and FI just decided white for the outer envelopes when I asked his opinion.  His reasoning "Its a damn envelope, as long as the inside is pretty who cares about the outside?"

haha, that is pretty much what I said, but FI wanted blue. And I'm a softy when it comes to him.

Yea, I go soft on my FI when he decides he wants things. I want white table cloths and silver runners but he said he wants blue table cloths instead, I caved!.  He never cares about décor ever.  I will usually cave when he asks for things because he never really does when it  comes to the wedding.

  • Get a silver sharpie. I love them, and my experience was that they didn't have the running issues that other markers have - because it's SHARPIE and seriously sharpies are the.best.evah.

Thanks I love alcohol and all things Tolkien, I needed to combine the two seamlessly. I love your gif too. I'm always attached to the TV when GoT seasons air and the Red Wedding joke is awesome.

  • I used white calligraphy ink on our navy inner envelopes but I was worried about the USPS being picky about delivering them like that, so we opted for a lighter outer envelope. The white ink looked nice.

Color cousin here: Royal Blue, silver, and pink (...fuchsia). Royal blue envelopes would have been so pretty with our invites, but I'm cheap and white came with them for free! I chose about 5 styles that I really liked, and FI narrowed it down to two, and then we came to a consensus. FI is in the wedding business, so he has a LOT of opinions, which this indecisive libra appreciates!
