Wedding Invitations & Paper

Best Printing Options for DIY STD/Invites

I designed my own STD and invitations, and now I'm trying to decide where to print them. For those of you who have had your cards printed, can you recommend a good, but reasonably-priced place to print them? I'm less concerned about the STD, but want to make sure the invites look nice. And any thoughts on what card stock / paper quality is best?

I saw that Staples has a good deal for the STD postcards - 250 for under $50 - and it's on 130 lb super glossy paper. Is that good? Has anyone had experience printing with Staples and would they recommend?

Re: Best Printing Options for DIY STD/Invites

  • I did the paper stuff for my wedding (programs, menus, etc) and printed everything at work. If I could do it over again, I would price out the printing service at cardsandpockets.com. They have a service where you send them the file with your invite and they will print and cut the STDs. Even if you don't use the service, check out the website for paper. Good luck!

  • Giaspo! I'll check out that site.

  • I designed my own and used vista print to print them. I got postcard for the response cards to save on postage :)

  • photokitty what card stock did you use from Vista Print? And were you happy with the print quality? I've ordered business cards from them before and been disappointed with the quality. Maybe they're better now!

  • I designed my STD and invitation suite. I used vistaprint for my STD postcards and Cards and Pockets' Print shop for invitations. I was very pleased with both.

  • I used OfficeMax for most of my stuff and was extremely happy. When it was time to print the Shower Invites (postcards), we used Staples and I was sadly disappointed. A lot of them showed up at people's homes smudged...Try OfficeMax if you have one near by.

  • I have used vistaprint for many things, you just have to be careful of their margins... I am doing my own invitations, and I am printing them on my own printer... I have made many many invitations, and my printer does great... We have a photosmart printer
  • I would also check out local mom and pop copy shops near you. I went to a local mom and pop shop near me instead of staples, officemax and so forth, and we had them print off 70 5x7 STDs and they only charged $20-$30 dollars.

  • I did invitations for FSIL's bridal shower last year. I took my files to kinkos and they had a lot of cardstock options to choose from. I picked a paper that matched some envelopes I found at Staples. Worked out great, and they cut and folded everything. Pretty inexpensive too.

  • I uploaded mine to Vistaprint and had them print it. It was about $20 for 50. If you designed your own, be careful with borders (make sure you have a bleed and trim overflow) and don't use their Save The Date option, use their normal postcard option. It saves a few bucks.

  • I designed my own too and printed them at the little mom and pop print shop I work at. We used a 130lb glossy paper, they look really nice!

I would suggest trying to find one of these shops because they are usually really inexpensive and great quality. Or if that doesn't sound good, go to kinkos. I printed a lot of stuff there when I graduated college and was impressed. You can also ask them for a sample before you go ahead with the full order.
  • caitlinmca @bmydesigner I would love to do it at a local shop! Or backup, at Kinkos or brittany8788 thanks so much for the advice about Staples. I will definitely avoid them. Thanks!

P.S. if anyone knows a good local shop in Los Angeles, I'd love to know!

To try and find a local mom and pop shop you're local board might be able to give you a few names.

  • I just printed our Rehearsal Dinner invitations today at Kinkos. Meh. I didn't bring my own cardstock and their cardstock options are very limited. I used just their "natural" color cardstock and they came out looking pretty much like I made them myself and printed them at Kinkos. But this is basically my last wedding task and I'm so over it all, I just stopped caring. I tried to make up for it with fancy envelopes. Whatever. Bottom line: if you go to Kinkos bring your own fancy paper.
  • lotsosandwiches Ha! I'm feeling similarly already... with 9 months to go. Yikes. Good to know about Kinkos. Will definitely consider buying paper in advance.
